1 out of 5 stars BAD BAD BAD   November 6, 2005
G. Mendoza (Northern CA)
I had problems with mine almost from day one it has never worked right and I only wish I'd returned it while I had the chance. Someone earlier tried to imply that it was poor disc quality. But I've bought brand new discs unwrapped them popped them in and had them not play through. Then take the same disc into the other room and put it in a $50.00 Oritron Player and had it play PERFECTLY... These machines might well serve better as a doorstop than as a DVD Player.

1 out of 5 stars Low quality, no sound   December 23, 2002

I gave the DV-740U as a gift and am ashamed. After only five months of use, which included playing three DVDs and two CDs, the sound stopped working. The person I gave it to wasn't able to use it enough times to experience the problems others have had, but the lack of sound from either the RCAs or the coaxial digital output has made the DV-740U nothing more than a paperweight.

The best part is that Sharp only covers labor for 90 days, so it'll cost my friend shipping, a deposit of [$$$] and who knows how much more to fix it.

Avoid this DVD player and consider another brand.

Hey to all you out there that has prob's with the dv740u. I concure also that the machine has some bad problems, But if you contact the sharp help line they will help you out. After having the machine into the shop for three times and finally having the traverse deck replaced. I finally called sharp they told me they would send me another upgraded one to replace this unit. Should be getting it in 10 day's.
Ps. can any-one tell me if they have had any experience with the sharp modle DVS2U.

This is a great unit , one of the best out there. Also has great looks and features. As far as the skipping problems other customers had, I would recommend that they complain to thier rental shop. It is the DVD quality , not the player, that causes these problems. In fact,I have had DVD's skip in other units but not skip in the DV-740U(it has superior laser design). In all the DVD's I have ever rented, About 70% of them skip. DVD's are very fragile when it comes to magnets and electric fields, ect. The info(bits) are easily lost.

1 out of 5 stars Sharp DV740U Freezes, locks-up, and stutters.   March 9, 2002

I'd rate this unit zero (0) stars if it was allowed!!

I got this unit as gift for XMAS and have little experience with DVDs. Since XMAS almost all DVD titles exhibit some abnormality in playing about an one to 1.5 hours into the movie -- either stuttering, freezing or lock-ups. With some DVDs the playback artifacts are minor and short-lived -- with other DVDs once the player hiccups it keeps it up for the entire movie. And once the player locked-up and had to be powered off/on. Because of my inexperience I thought it was me, or the DVDs; after reading these reviews and an analysis of the problem on anther website I'm sure it's the 740U unit (which is really a .... 611 clone.)

It's been very frustrating!! ...

Thanks to all the people who entered their reviews into this forum, this has been a very frustrating and maddening experience. (And, to Amazon.com for providing this forum.)

In closing, I know one electronics manufacturer who's lost a customer. Most likely I'll order my new DVD player from Amazon!

PS: I still haven't heard from ...., but I talked to the manager of the retailer I bought the Sharp unit from. I explained the problem, showed him the web info I had collected, and he took the 740U back for a store credit. I purchased one of the top rated units shown on Amazon.
