worst mp3 player ever December 30, 2008 orionblues (Philadelphia) I use a mp3 player to workout, and prefer to have one that uses batteries, so if I get to the gym and it has run low, I can replace a battery and keep going, rather than wait until I get home. Which is why I chose the Pearl, as it is one f the few mp3 players that uses a battery. Big mistake. By far, the most annoying thing about this player is that it never remembers what song you were listening to once you turn it off. You need to go through the menus and hunt down the song. On top of that, once it's through playing an album, it doesn't just go to the next album. Instead, it shuts off. Great. You can't even advance out of one album into another. Sometimes, just for fun, it plays an album in some random order. There's no documentation, so I never knew that it can't deal with an SD card larger than 2GB. It doesn't come with a carry case, and is too misshapen to fit in any other case. Get the picture? The Pearl gets tired, real quick. Just ignore the low price, move on, and get something else. Seriously, just move on.
Just not very good. December 25, 2008 Tyler (Mobile, AL USA) Was given this as a gift; needed an mp3 player for the car and gym, and this seemed to be something concise and practical enough for both. Reading the reviews on this site, it's apparent that the problems with my player are typical of the entire range of Pearl products, and symptomatic of poor quality control. My player is exceptionally buggy, and often times stops in the middle of songs, skips tracks, turns on/off on its own, refuses to turn off alternately, and is generally given to produce problems once for every twenty minutes I attempt to use it. I really wanted to like this player, because it is very small and holds a great deal of file info, but that is worthless without consistent play ability. Additionally, files are moved all over the place out of their original playlists; whole albums uploaded from the original factory CD are separated into pools of "Unknown Artist" listings, while one or two songs will appear in the correct place. I have no idea why this is, or how this works, except that it's crap to me, and is no better than the Creative Zen player that I had previously, which was also a bust. My biggest disappointment was the hardware upgrade from the RCA site not recognizing my player. Whatever. My recommendation is to just bite the bullet and buy a more up-level player from a reputable company. Thanks for nothing, RCA.
Resume play works across power cycle after firmware upgrade November 23, 2008 aixylinux (Marietta, GA) What other reviewers have not mentioned is a feature very important to me. I use the player mostly to listen to podcasts. When I turn the player off and on, I want to resume play at exactly the same point. A surprising number of players lack this feature. Out of the box, this unit would restart at the beginning of the MP3 file. Not good. There is a Resume option when playing music, but this option did not work across a power cycle. I found that the current firmware on the manufacturer's web site ([...]) has fixed this feature. Now the unit will resume play after a power cycle and even after new MP3 files are added to the Music folder. Now the only deficit in the player is the lack of a lanyard to secure it around my neck. It is only retained by the headphone cables. I haven't tried any of the other features such as FM, voice recording, Audible, etc., as they are of no interest to me. Nor have I used the bundled software.
Good for the money November 19, 2008 D. Colvin I bought this because it is also an digital voice recorder. I have had no problems with it. It has performed well. The software is not user friendly, but works well with windows. I do use the mini SD and this increases my music catalog a great deal. I can pretty much take my entire CD collection in a small packet. I have nearly 600 CDs so, I get a huge variety. It's not perfect, but for under $50.00, it does fine. Sound quality is greatly enhanced by real headphones. Throw the ones that come with it away, or use them for emergency backup.
failed after approx. 1 month from purchase November 18, 2008 HHlistener (CA) I purchased this RCA MP3 player approx. 1 month ago; its useful life didn't even go past its first battery. I kept putting in different fresh AAA batteries to no avail; it failed to power up even with the MP3 player unlocked (there is a lock/unlock switch you can slide back and forth). I plugged the MP3 player into 3 different computers and none of the computers recognized its existence on the USB port. BTW, it did not ever fall to the ground or sustain any hard impact. I have two older models from RCA and they work fine. This newer blue RCA Pearl unit is far from being a jewel; ironically, it offers the most disappointment among my RCA MP3 players. My loyalty to RCA products took a hit.
