It works but nothing special November 11, 2008 AV Guy 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I also own the prior year's model. The prior year's model is a much better unit. The 3980 just seems cheap. It's so lightweight, my HDMI cable keeps causing it to turn sideways in the cabinet. However, that being said, it does do what a dvd player is supposed to do. It upconverts to 1080p and even though they don't list it, it will bitstream DTS. The bells and whistles make it a real bargain, but I am concerned about reliability. I will update if I start having any problems with it.
One fatal flaw. October 30, 2008 Martin Reck 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Although the unit produces a good picture and generally works well, it has one fatal flaw. Every so often (maybe once a week wiith light use) it will not read any disc. This can be rectified by unplugging the unit from the electrical power and then plugging it back in. Shutting off the unit will not do, as this puts it in "standby". This is a real pain if your power cord is plugged in behind a cabinet, as is mine. I'm in the process of leaving the unit on at all times (by disabling the automatic standby mode) to see if this will solve the problem, although it would waste a little electricity. The unit is probably to0 inexpensive to return for this problem, but I would recommend customers spend a little more for something else.
NICE. October 28, 2008 Charles A. Prado (Lake Arroehead, Ca.) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great for the price. Got for a lady friend she likes it as well.
FYI ... no HDMI cable October 15, 2008 W. Harries (Philadelphia, PA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Seems like a good enough DVD player, but the box does not indicate (nor do online descriptions) that the HDMI cable is not included. Can't imagine that the additional cost couldn't just be added to the price of this player. Almost deceptive packaging, disappointing.
Better than I expected August 29, 2008 Zachary Cole (Rockland, ME) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I decided to buy a new DVD player when my old XBOX refused to play one of my discs. Thought about Blu-Ray, but the price and lousy user ratings turned me off. For folks like me, who have an HDTV and not a lot of dough, this is a solid option. It makes about a minute to hook up (buy a HDMI cable first!)The picture quality is great, especially with you fiddle with the settings via the menu. As others have mentioned, the remote is kinda cheap, but it works and that downside shouldn't stop anyone from buying this player.
