Amazon.com Product Description Stylisly appointed for the most discriminating tastes, the 40-inch JVC LT40X887 LCD HDTV is a sound home theater investment for today and years to come. More than just a pretty face, it's loaded with the latest JVC video technology to ensure a long-lasting, brightly colorful picture. This set features JVC's 5th generation 770p DIST (Digital Image Scaling Technology) with the Genessa 32-bit image processing CPU, which insures faster and more efficient sampling that drastically reduces jagged edges and increases the resolution of any video source. You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the dual HDMI or dual component connections. Its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception (via component or HDMI inputs), and it includes a standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. This set features a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing angle, 500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and 800:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The digital 3D Y/C comb filter (with vertical contour correction) separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. And JVC's exclusive Motion Adaptive Dynamic Gamma Correction (DGC) utilizes data from every signal level to ensure that tonal gradations are preserved in dark areas so images never look muddied. The Natural Cinema feature performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. The set's Digital Super Detail (DSD) correction technology works with the Natural Progressive Circuitry to reproduce completely focused pictures, whether the image is still or highly active. A 5-point Color Management System (CMS) compensates for color range limitations and ensures JVC colors are reproduced with dimension and vivid detail. Other video processing and display features include digital video noise reduction, white character correction circuitry, five video status modes (theater, dynamic, game, standard, and TheaterPro D6500K), and seven aspect ratio modes with EZ Fill feature that enables you to choose the aspect ratio to suit your preferences. Other convenience features include a multi-function timer and standard sleep timer, 10-minute auto shut-off, front panel lock, high-speed channel changer, and V-Chip parental controls. The built-in, front-firing speakers produce 10 watts of power per channel for 20 watts of total power, and it also offers virtual surround sound, advanced tone correction and a volume limiter. The IEEE 1394 (also known as Firewire or i.Link) multimedia connection provides simple, high-bandwidth, real-time audio, video and data networking between this JVC TV and digital video camcorders and compatible PC systems, enabling you to record SD or HD digital video with plug-and-play ease. It offers the following connection options: - Composite AV (RCA): 3 in
- S-Video: 2 in
- Component video: 2 in
- HDMI: 2 in
- FireWire (IEEE1394): 2
- PC VGA: 1 in
- RF: 2 in
- Audio output: 1 optical digital out, 1 headphone
Tech Talk HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections. Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound. What's in the Box LCD HDTV, removeable stand, remote control (with batteries), printed operating instructions

Can't ask for anything more... but got more than I thought! October 9, 2007 Daniel Reytan (Miami, Fl United States) I was first extremely attracted to the sexy, elegant and understated looks of this LCD TV but the rest seemed to have one important better feature... the higher contrast ratio. Until one day I saw it at Best Buy next to a super expensive LCD TV, famous brand name and they were both side by side playing the same program when I noticed blacks and grays looked exactly the same on both televisions. It seems JVC LCD tv's have an extra feature to boost blacks that is not accounted for only in the contrast ratio numbers. I WAS SOLD! After taking it home I only found a lot more to like about this tv. It has become my new computer monitor since, dvi to hdmi (computer to tv hdmi) yields an AMAZING picture... no you can't see any pixels not even if you get as close as possible, at least not with windows vista and GeForce 8, you even get the post (computer startup before logon and bios settings)! Another EXCELLENT feature I haven't seen on any other LCD TV of this size is the capability to pivot it side to side and having the circular design in the front it never seems out of square even if it's facing towards one side. The settings are endless and I'll stop here or I'll never finish. All I can say is you'll never regret this purchase!
Picture are great June 1, 2007 T. Nguyen (San Jose CA) Pro: The picture & sound are great. Con: when you change the channel in HD mode, you have to wait for that channel comes on before you can jump to the next one. For example: change channel 2 to 4, you have to wait for 4 comes before you can move to 5, 6 etc.

LCD? Plasma? DLP? 1080p? After 4 months of driving myself crazy researching HDTVs, I'm happy to say I settled on the JVC 40x887. Reason #1: I've never had a problem with the numerous JVC products I've owned over the years. I cannot say enough about the beauty of this set, on or off! The SD picture is much better than I expected. The 770p HD picture is rich and punchy. I sit there in awe every time I'm in front of it:-) Reason #2: Apparently, JVC doesn't market their line of televisions nearly as much as the other guys and the way I see it, that's more money to pour into quality. You will likely struggle to find this model on the floor but when you do, you'll see what I mean! The unit contains a Sammy panel, same one in the Sonys. I decided to skip plasma and DLP because of flaws I deemed impossible to overcome. Burn-in, break-in periods, screen glare, changing $300 bulbs, black grass, rainbows, who needs that stuff!?! I passed on 1080p because you basically have to be a superfreak to tell the difference. I'll take the money I saved and plop it down on a new Oppo dvd player, thank you very much. This HDTV can be had for several hundred less than comparable LCDs and I STRONGLY suggest giving it the time it deserves before pulling the trigger on your new LCD. One more thing not to be overlooked: JVC HDTVs have D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology)with GENESSA Picture Processing which make them one of the few to pass the 3/2 and deinterlacing tests... http://hometheatermag.com/hookmeup/1106hook/ Feel free to email me with any questions. rvbfl@yahoo.com
I have the 37" version. January 1, 2007 John R. Ellwanger (New Rochelle, New York United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought the 37" version (LT37X887) but I believe my comments are totally relevant to the 40" version. The picture, as the other viewers point out, is superb! Sound is very good. It's New Year's day and we had a party New Year's Eve with 22 adults. Almost all commented on how crisp and detailed the picture looked in HD. This includes my son who went for the 50" Pioneer plasma and my neighbor who has the 37" plasma from Panasonic. My son can't believe it's an LCD, the picture being so crisp and clear. No apparrent problems with "black detail" or blurring with fast action scenes. On Christmas Eve, we had the burning yule log on the screen with just music playing. When my wife first saw it, she thought we had a fire in the living room. Makes you wonder about all the discussion of Plasma versus LCD!
Great TV December 31, 2006 James Decker (Arlington, VA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this TV for Christmas this year and it's amazing. The picture is incredibly clear, and as the previous poster stated, the setup was extremely simple. Watching TV is an experience on this model. I love it.
