freezing up November 28, 2008 Mary Alice Chamberlain Philips PET702 7-Inch Portable DVD Player br / br /Was working great. Short battery life and started freezing up after 6 months of use. Tried cleaning dvd but that freezes up too. Paid $50 for it from amazon and having difficulty getting anyone to care that it lasted me only 6 months.
Nice Item Except For Serious Bug November 26, 2008 Greg Goebel (Loveland, CO USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although this portable DVD player is a very nice item for the price, as mentioned in other reviews it suffers from a serious bug -- it can display widescreen 16:9 video but it will not crop the display on the sides to properly show 4:3 video, instead stretching it horizontally to fit and distorting the picture. br / br /This is NOT just a problem with old TV shows, it distorts the video on every anime DVD I've tried on it, as well as a number of other DVDs that weren't shot in a widescreen format. Some modern TV shows do seem to have widescreen options and will work. br / br /I contacted Philips support in hopes they knew about the problem and had a fix, but all I got was a blank response. So if all you ever watch is modern movies, this thing works fine -- but anything else, you're taking your chances. I've had a number of DVD players but this is the first one I've run across with such a problem.
Two in a row have died prematurely. November 18, 2008 Jujube (NY, USA) I wish that I could assign this product 0 stars. br / br /Picture quality was good. Controls easy. Wished that there were better sound range, as different disks seem to have different volumes and this player couldn't compensate. It was often difficult to hear over average car noises. But, all of these observations are irrelevant when compared to the mechanical problems. br / br /Purchased this model in April with a one year warranty. In June, some occasional problems, but we attributed them to worn or smudged disks. In July it began skipping and stopping continuously. Tried disk cleaners, DVD cleaners, to no avail. Closer examination revealed that it was the spindle. br / br /Returned to Philips who replaced it...with a reconditioned model with a 3 month warranty. I was suspicious when I received it, but reasoned that a reconditioned model should work. Unfortunately, it has died (pixelated screen) at just 3 months. I've been shorted 6 months off of my original warranty and Philips is not sympathetic. br / br /Next stop, Better Business Bureau or other agency. br / br /I will not again purchase a Philips product. br /
Turn up the volume November 1, 2008 R. Deffenbaugh I bought this for my employees to watch training videos. It works well but the volume never gets loud enough to hear in the workplace. Headphones are usually used to help out in this situation. Easy to use and a good picture.
The Best and Most Reliable October 26, 2008 Pony Rider I got this for my birthday, and the next day, I was out on the road with it. We watched many, many different movies, and they all worked great. Even in bumps, there was no freezing on the screen. The one con I have is that my brother used it, and he didn't turn it off all the way. There is no button to turn it off. Instead, there is a little flip-switch type thing. Make sure you turn it off ALL THE WAY (double check) so you can watch it when you aren't in reach of electric. Overall, this is worth the price, and I reccomend you get this DVD player over any others in this price range. I also recommend a case by CaseLogic to hold it in.
