Great for motorcycle touring on my sports/tourer December 22, 2008 Mal (Illinois, USA) Firstly I bought this as an additional aid when sport/touring on my Suzuki SV650S to be used in conjunction with a map on my tank bag. My criteria was: Waterproof Battery powered and rechargeable (I did not want to run a 12v outlet) Small (but still able to read easily) Price The re-manufactured Quest fit all these criteria. I was pleasantly surprised when I received it. It Appears to be brand new except for the 'newly overhauled' sticker on the box. This unit is no where near as easy to operate as my touch screen Garmin C330 in my truck and I suggest sitting down for a couple of hours just playing with it and you should become very conversant with its operation and features. It probably has scores more adjustable settings than is really required. For most users the default options will probably be all that is required. For battery operation on a motorcycle a few power saving options need to be set to maximize battery life between charging. I might also add that I have ALL sound turned off as I would not be able to hear it due to wind noise whilst riding and the speaker plugs into a 12v outlet which I dont have nor want on my bike. This quest has basic interstates and highway for the whole US but if you require more detail like streets, names, POI, etc then you must have maps loaded into it. The number of maps you can add largely depends on if there are major cities which are larger. Here in the mid-west I was able to add 23 maps which covers the majority of the 4 states around my location which works for me. I mounted it to my clipon handlebars using a RAM-B-149-GA15 / RAM U-BOLT MOUNT W/ GA15U HOLDER setup (customer image uploaded) from [...] for around[...]. It does give an adjustable and convenient motorcyle solution though which can easily be removed to stop theft. Using it with gloved hands is not easy but I just put in the destination and of I go. I dont need to touch it after that. Conclusion: I love it. Waterproof, lasts hours on a charge, nice and small but viewable especially with auto-zoom enabled and for [...] it does not really hurt the hip pocket. A great investment for a small price tag. Configuration and MapSource software is a little hard at first but within a couple of hours I found I was flying around the menus and software with ease. With all that said I would probably get a Quest II as my next purchase as there are no maps to download if you travel a lot.
Quest review October 16, 2008 G. Neuenfeldt (Denver, Co.) I bought this as a replacement of my older Garmin V, and is primarily used on my motorcycles. I like the screens and functions of the Garmin V, and this unit is very similar, with notable differences of a color screen (although ever-so-slightly smaller than the V), automatic changes to a night vision screen, greater memory capacity, is more compact for ease of carry and has a really long built-in battery life. The Garmin V requires 4 AA batteries, and went though them pretty fast. Thus far it's been functioning perfectly, and receives satellite signals faster than the V. My only complaint is I wish the screen was a little larger, similar to the Nuvi models Garmin makes.
Skeptical at first but very pleased with the unit September 30, 2008 Henry Arnold (Tri-Cities, TN) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
When I first purchased this re-manufactured unit I was skeptical about the low price but I thought I would give it a shot. The screen looked smaller than most I have seen and I was afraid I would not be able to see it. I was proven wrong on this and the unit is very user friendly within a couple of hours. I also have a motorcycle and bicycle which this has adapters for. The drawbacks to this unit are the smaller screen and the limited memory. I travel all over the country and I have to download the maps if I switch coasts. This is not a big problem but the newer models don't have to do that. This has been a great initiation GPS to become familiar with the advantages of having a GPS without spending a great deal of money.
Excellent price for this unit September 24, 2008 B. Slaughter (United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had an older Quest for over 2 years. It was time to upgrade its maps for $75. Instead, I bought this 2nd one for little more than the cost of the new maps. Altho Amazon doesn't particular tell you so, Garmin will upgrade your unit to the latest software if the software comes out within the 1 year of free updates. My unit was still recorded in the Garmin system from its first sale (remember, this is refurbished) and I had to email their customer service to get the prior ownership record deleted so I could register it to me. They did, and I upgraded the unit to the new 2009 MapSource online with no trouble. I did have to contact Garmin a second time to get them to remove the old purchase date, but they did do so. I use this unit walking, on my motorcycle, in cars and even in the motorhome. It is extremely adaptable to any situation. The old one is now left on the motorcycle. Do not think that you can "share" the updated MapSource data. It only works on the new unit.
Old technology, but has some of the best features. Great deal September 10, 2008 A. Truong (San Jose, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i use this unit on my bicycle and in the car. It is very robust. I have dropped it a few times no problem (try that with a Nuvi!). Despite the old chipset and antenna, this little gem has the most customizable feature. I love the display: it's much more visible (with backlight OFF) in direct sunlight; in comparison, the Nuvi series cannot be viewed w/o back-light in the sun - this is a very important power-saving feature for bicycling and motorcycling if not plugged in. It's not really the easiest unit to own, but it beats the Nuvi in terms of sophistication and function: very good mapping, customizable display, tracking of where you went (for off road and back country rides and such). For example, i have simultaneous display of "speed" "gps accuracy" "elevation" and "time of day" display next to the map on roaming mode, then automaticly switch to "speed" "accuracy" "time to destination" "distance to destination" on routing mode. Every display field can be customized, as well as clear showing of POI and custom POI. In contrast, the Nuvi (i owned a 660) has dumbed this down to a idiot-proof-non-customizable display with very little detail: great for simplicity and get to the point, but not much fun factor given the powerful capability of a GPS. At the blow out price currently, this probably is the best GPS deal around right now. In short: if you love features and gadget, this is the cat meow. If you prefer simplicity and don't care for reading the manual, avoid this one.
