Amazon.com Product Description
A full-featured, expandable vehicle navigation system, the refurbished Magellan RoadMate 2200T GPS navigator is a must for family vacations, business outings, and a host of other on-the-go occasions. The device is outfitted with simple touch-screen menus and a built-in interactive map of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, making it easy to select virtually any destination and enjoy turn-by-turn directions as you drive. The 3.5-inch color touch-screen display also lets you enter an address or select a point of interest to instantly receive the best possible route using the shortest time, shortest distance, most freeways, or least freeways. And thanks to the nearly 1.5 million preprogrammed points of interest, you can quickly find the addresses and phone numbers (when available) of gas stations, airports, hotels, restaurants, and much more. It's also possible to save your personal points of interest to the internal address book or favorites list and then access them later.

The RoadMate 2200T comes with the SIRF StarIII advanced processing chipset, which boasts a stronger and wider search range that quickly acquires a satellite signal even in urban canyons and other traditional "no signal" locations. When time is of the essence, you can take advantage of some of the RoadMate's advanced features, including helpful technology that routes you around sudden slow freeway traffic, a multi-destination routing option, QuickSpell software that automatically completes your entry for quicker recognition, and a 3D birds-eye view that helps you clearly see your surroundings. You can even select up to 20 destinations in advance to plan out where you need to go.

Although the RoadMate 2200T is designed for the vehicle, you can also upgrade it to become a CrossoverGPS 1 suitable for all your outdoor adventures (the upgrade accepts topographic outdoor maps). And because it's waterproof to IPX-4, there's no need to worry about coffee spills, rain, humidity, or renegade splashes. Perhaps the coolest feature for frequent drivers, however, is the built-in music player and picture viewer, which let you take your entertainment wherever you go.

Other features include a best-in-class battery performance that provides up to eight hours of continuous use, a Secure Digital (SD) card slot for memory expansion, and a high-impact plastic case. Measuring 4.28 by 3.15 by 1.12 inches (W x H x D), the RoadMate 2200T weighs 7.8 ounces and is backed by a one-year warranty. This product has been refurbished to like-new condition.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy   November 26, 2008
Todd R. Brangers (Lexington, KY)
Magellan Customer service is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. They offer a free 30 day map update since all of their products ship with out of date maps. This would be a good thing except it is in the fine print of their products and their customer support email address that their website list is the wrong address. I had to get through to their customer service by posting a bad review on their website. By the time they responded my unit was beyond the 30 day limit and they refused to give me the update. This is a bad business practice. Garmin has a 60 day guarantee which is posted directly on their website in plain view.

1 out of 5 stars I got lost   June 13, 2008

I was in a small town where I've never been to. It couldn't find the way out. Just keep asking me to make truns in the same block, and couldn't take me back to major road/ heighway.
Also, the interface is not very friendly to use. Not enough function is another thing I don't like.
I used it once and returned it. Then I bought Garmin nuvi which runs perfectly, very accurate, lots of function, and friendly to use.

2 out of 5 stars Ancient maps, short warranty, and no free update   June 13, 2008
nopcbs (mid-Michigan)
This is not a bad unit and it would be a good unit except for one fact. It ships with (mediocre at best) maps dated August 2006 and Magellan wants you to pay $80 plus shipping for an update. If you buy the refurb and then the update disk you are at the price of a new Garmin Nuvi 350 which will have a one year warranty (instead of 90 day) and it will come with current maps plus it is a simply superior unit. (Consumer Reports Best Buy.)

Do not buy this unit unless you simply must have obsolete maps, poor customer support (no excuse for not including a map update) and a short warranty.

This is an intellegence test. Do not fail it!

4 out of 5 stars Magellan 2200T vs. TomTom One 3rd Ed. => 2200T wins!   June 11, 2008
G. Litwinski (Midland, MI United States)
I recently bought myself a refurb. TomTom One 3rd Ed. and I like it a lot. I like the ease of use, the fact that you can upload voices for free (although no Aussie female, unfortunately), the points of interest is pretty large, it is easy to use and it navigates well. Price was under $100 after rebate.

Then I decided to buy another ~$100 GPS as a gift. This time a Magellan 2200T refurb. with a free bean-bag mount add on. I did the firmware update and decided to try it out expecting it to be inferior to the TomTom (from ratings I viewed).

Here are some comparisons:

TomTom voice choices are far broader, but 2200T has a female Aussie voice standard! Who needs more?

TomTom does not do text to speech while 2200T does and, further, 2200T gives a beep as you near turn point. A big plus for 2200T.

Battery in 2200T lasts significantly longer.

TomTom interface is better. 2200T is not bad, but it is a little rough around edges. TomTom ease of use slightly better as result.

2200T accepts flash cards and can show images and play music. Who cares that TomTom cannot?

TomTom lets you update your maps on purchase for 30 days for free, it appears that Magellan does not, although a firmware update was free. I get the impression that Magellan maps are older. TomTom maps are $100 while Mgellan are $80 with free marine upgrade.

TomTom has one year warranty while Magellan is a silly 90 days.

TomTom has a simple and not very good suction cup mount. Magellan's is a LOT better with a proper ratchet suction cup and double-jointed mount. I attached Magellan to my side window with ease; forget that for TomTom. Big plus for 2200T.

TomTom will not lock on satellites indoors, Magellan has far better SIRF processor and you can use it indoors. Very senstive receiver.

TomTom lets you add map corrections. Not 2200T.

Overall, to my surprise, the 2200T is a better buy. Its minuses vs. Tom Tom One 3rd. Ed. are minor and the pluses (SIRF, text to voice, excellent mount) are significant. For the money, about $100, the 2200T is the better buy by a good bit. Short warranty is an issue, though.
