simple smooth satisfied January 6, 2009 Bert A. Kennedy (Texas) This is my first GPS unit. I am not a gadget guy. I bought this unit for a long trip (1600 miles) through lots of unfamiliar road systems. Set up was very easy. Everything worked right out of the box. The first trip I worked with was to the next city over. It gave me options of how to enter my destination, I chose and it said start driving. My wife was with me and said she needed to stop at a store on the way which I had not planned for. The GPS altered our rout to account for a different starting place and still got us to our destination. As we live in a major metro area, there are many different ways to get where you want to go. As we came to major roads the GPS told us to stay left of the exit and look for signs to proceed. Very handy to know which lane to be in if you are unfamiliar with the city. We use it now even for places we go to often and it has a favorite option which lists the address of favorite destinations stored so you do not have to re-enter them. Overall a great unit with good solid features easy to set up and use. The only slight flaw was the sound could be louder. I have not used the mp3 player yet but it does have a headphone attachment which should solve the sound problem.
so far so good December 31, 2008 Bob M (Chicago) I received an X3-08 for Christmas and just set it up and tried it today. Seems to be a good unit as far as navigation and adjusting when you go off route. Seems solid and I really like the mount. Also pleased that you get all of the accessories you will need. The display is fine at night (haven't tried it in daylight yet) and I like the touchscreen and intuitive menu system; although I have large fingers and did have just a bit of trouble making selections at the edges of the screen (they give you a stylus though; although I'm not sure if there's any storage for it on the unit or mount). one quirk I found while initially configuring the device (which is pretty simple I might add) was when I switched to the MP3 or Photo Viewer functions. I had trouble exiting so I could get back to the NAV mode and had to use the reset button on the back. I would assume this was because the map SD card was installed and not a one with .MP3 or .JPG files (or maybe it had something to do with being indoors and not getting a lock on the satellites). No big deal to me though because I definitely won't be using this as a photo frame or for music. I found Text-To-Speech to be wanting as far as clarity and volume but didn't expect much from such a compact device anyway. Was pleasantly surprised though when I tried using a patch cord from the head phone jack to the AUX jack on my car sterio. Speech quality was excellent after that; so I would expect that earbuds would also work better than the built-in speakers. Maps are fine but this is my first time using one of these devices so I don't have much of a point of reference. All in all I give this unit good marks. Unit was purchased elsewhere for $99 with a $20 rebate, which seems like a steal. Should also mention that if you buy one and don't have an AUX jack on your car radio, I would imagine that you could probably accomplish the same thing using one of those FM transmitters that they sell for .MP3 players.
Amazing for the Price! December 11, 2008 Karl Willke (Farmville, Va) I bought this unit at a black Friday sale for $79.99. Before I did I read reviews on it and most said it was great for the price. I will have to agree. First of all its the lowest price gps I've ever seen. I used to work at RadioShack a few months ago and worked there for over a year so I have tested a bunch of gps units. This one is just as accurate as any gps out there. It also has text to speech which is great becuase when you come to a bunch of roads and your not sure which one to take this says the actual road name instead of just turn here. Like in one of the reviews earlier this is not a flashy gps. You can't change the voices to famous people and you can only do so much with the display but the features you need are there. Pros - 1. Predictive text when typing in the city name or road name makes for quick routing. 2. There are 4 different modes to set your route, such as quickest, shortest distance and so on. You can also modify them to avoid tolls and so on. 3. Text to speech is awesome. 4. Extra Features such as an mp3 player if you aren't using it for directions. 5. It comes with everything you would ever need for a gps. It comes with a case, mounting for the window or dash, Home and Car Charger, Software for map upgrades on the SD card, and really good instruction manuals. 6. The touch screen is very accurate and responsive. Cons- 1. The Battery life isn't the greatest. But no gps is yet. If you set the screen to the dimmest possible it lasts around 2 to 2.5 hours if you leave the brightness all the way up it it will last 1 to 1.5 hours. 2. No bluetooth but what do you expect for the price. To be honest unless you have a phone that can send directions to the gps who needs bluetooth anyway. 3. There aren't as many POI's as other gps units out there. It only has 1.5 million when others have 6 million. Overall the Cons seem to be things that aren't a necessity when having a gps. So if you don't care about the cons I listed this is a great unit. When I am buying a gps I care about map accuracy and the text to speech thing is pretty nice and this gps has those. Also the map updates are supposed to be free when they come out. Unlike any other gps unit.
My future GPS? December 5, 2008 HB (Sarasota,FL USA) Bought one on black Friday to replace my original GARMIN Quest. The Quest Model one cannot be updated and its failing battery is epoxied in. So...I opened the NEXTAR box and enjoyed unpacking all the components. A small travel case was included, as well as an AC adapter(which I believe is standard for all GPS devices), a solid designed mount that comes with an additional adhesive disc that is intended for the two states that do not permit suction cups on a windshield. This is to prevent interference from a good outward vision as one drives, never mind the large dice or air fresheners hanging under the mirror often seen. Two booklets... one for the unit itself and the other for the software illustrate how it all comes together. In addition a single page that asks that if I should see anything that does not agree with the provided software such as missing or incorrect information I should become a NAVTEQ Map Reporter. I'll pass...thanks. Another brochure like paper was included with an overall pictorial of the unit's buttons and connections. The first thing I did after I charged the battery was to put in the address of my work place which has been in existence for the last 23 years. Alas this was not to be... the house numbers were to low to be accepted or that address. No matter which method was used to enter the address, it was not going to happen. I then went online for help. In order to get this help I had to register first. I was asked all kinds of questions... not really pertinent to give me a proper warranty, but I needed assistence. After getting the serial no.and another long no from the box I completed the registration procedure. As I advanced to the registration, a page came up saying that I did not put in the two zip codes required. So I went back as requested and lo and behold all the info I had to put in was gone. At this point I was not a happy camper. A phone no was located showing that I still had almost an hour for help. Unfortunately the information on the answering machine said that they were closed during this time. More sour taste... This particular model has no updated mapping to speak off as far as I know and that was the main reason I bought it. Sure it beats my old 2004 GPS but not by much The mount placed on the windshield is superb and the installation and removal of the unit from the mount is very quick, unlike my little QUEST where force was needed for removal. The coiled cord that came with the X3-03 is very heavy duty and well built. This stiff and heavy cord being what it is, also puts a stress on the fragile connection going into the unit that I fear in the long run it will fail. The nitty gritty at this time: Picture seems washed out it bright sunlight. I can't control mother nature! Speaker distorts at high output and this setting is necessary so one can hear the actual TTS(text to speech)of the streets where one must turn into. Today after waiting 25 minutes I finally spoke with a representative. This gentleman gave me some insight into the foibbles of the unit and that set my mind at ease some what. The issue of updated software however was not resolved. He believed that in several months updated maps will be made available to all registered owner. The question was whether it will cost extra and he couldn't tell me if or not That is the reason I bought a new one in the first place. It seemed to work fairly well but OFF ROUTE came on much to often. At this time I won't say anymore until I put it to use while on a trip I will continue reviewing this unit because it has some very good features, especially for the money, so...stay tuned... _________________________________________________________________ Well...after living with this unit a few more days, a better unit came up also from Kmart. This was the larger 4.3" NEXTAR Q4-01 for just $20 more. It may lack some minor features that the old one had, but it is also faster electronically. It has features that the smaller one didn't have and a sequence of language choices. It also covers Alaska and Puerto Rico. The deal is offered until next Saturday 12/20/08. This is a terrific bargain and should be considered. I always take care of anything I buy so all parts of the old unit were placed back in the box properly and returned without any issues.
I like it November 29, 2008 shelly (Texas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well, I just got mine yesterday, it's actually the x3-08, but I couldn't find here. I'm not sure how it differs from this one, but WE love it. I actually bought two, one for me and one for my husband. We've never had any others but it gets the job done and has the points of interest in our area. We have yet to try it out of town, but so far so good.
