2 out of 5 stars Great idea, limiting design   December 30, 2008
J. Hunter
Coming from a world of gadgets, this concept is excellent: a digital frame, music player, AND alarm clock.

The physical design of the clock is excellent, with a large snooze button, a clock-like look and feel, and a decent speaker. Even the functional design of the clock is cool, with 2 programmable alarms, 9-minute snooze, calendar display, various alarm sounds, and multiple backgrounds.

Unfortunately, the product managers at Philips have dropped the most critical design element for this type of product: the ability to view a slideshow and clock simultaneously.

Let me try to put this in perspective: customers buy digital photo frames to put an assortment of their digital pictures in SLIDESHOW MODE so that pictures can be viewed ongoing. That's just how people use digital photo frames (most of the time) - any user study will tell you that. So, for anyone merging the concept of an alarm clock with a digital photo frame, it would seem only NATURAL to allow users to view slideshows while simultaneously viewing the clock, right?

Well, unfortunately for us users, the product managers at Philips decided the clock would be "adequately designed" if only a single photo could be viewed in the clock-mode. What I really get a kick of is going over to the Philip's website and reading in their product-FAQ that the exclusion of the slideshow-clock feature was an intentional "design choice." To me, it sounds like a product manager over at Philips was nearing his deadline, and had that slideshow-clock feature ranked only "average" terms of priority and the engineers came back saying that the level-of-effort would be 12 extra days for development of the slideshow-clock feature. "Whoops, guess I better drop that feature..." Stupid, stupid product managers. Haven't people ever heard of user testing and focus groups?

I feel disgusting saying this, but every day now I'm starting to see more and more of the reason why so many people are just switching over to companies like Apple. Today, companies like Philips are constantly throwing features and functionality out the window in order to test the market with new products.

Anyway, enough with the rant. I'd give this clock a solid 4 stars if it weren't for the blatant disregard for the slideshow-clock feature. I'd say that unless you're dying to own something like this, then to wait for some of the other big electronic companies to start making similar products, which will probably be happening in the next 1-2 years.

Bought this from Walmart for $49. Total piece of junk. Followed directions and the software would not respond. Returning tomorrow.

4 out of 5 stars Philips Listens (and Delivers)   December 19, 2008

I bought this for my mom as a Christmas gift. She wanted a radio for on her desk at work and I thought this was a great dual purpose option - photos of her kids and some tunes to get her through the work day. I read the reviews after I placed my order and was very concerned she wasn't going to get as much out of it as I had originally thought. But it was already on it's way so I thought I'd give it a try.

When it arrived to my surprise it appears that Philips has listened to the customer feedback because a few of the issues identified by previous reviews have been resolve. First, you can now pick the default photo displayed in the `clock' mode if you install a SD or USB card (instead of defaulting to the first photo on the disk card). You still can view the clock and slideshow at the same time, but this is a slight improvement. Second, you can listen to the radio and view the photo slideshow at the same time. I was very excited about this change because this is exactly what I wanted it to do for my mom. I purchased a 2Gb SD card and loaded it with family photos to include with the radio for my mom. I think she's really going to like it. I'm so pleased I'm considering buying one for myself!

5 out of 5 stars Really versatile clock radio   December 7, 2008

First, keep in mind it's a clock radio, so you shouldn't expect too much. That said, it's the best $60 clock radio I've ever seen.

FM Radio: It's digital and pulled in stations I have trouble with on my other clock radios. 20 presets. It does not have an AM radio

Speakers: Sounds pretty good for a clock radio, better than I had hoped for.

It has an easy to use menu system to set the time and alarm and all the other features. Very intuitive. Didn't open the manual.

It plays avi movie files. The size is only limited by the SD card or USB flash drive. Playback was seamless. It's like watching a 7" DVD player with a slightly poorer screen quality, but much superior sound. (No headphone jack though)

It plays MP3 files. It will cycle through all the files on the SD card (or USB).

It will play all the JPGs in a slideshow either fullscreen or in a window next to the time. It doesn't look too good in the window but it's not bad full screen, better than I expected. You can listen to music and watch the slideshow.

It has 3 nature type sounds to help you fall asleep. I would never buy a Brookstone for twice as much.

I could dim it enough for my tastes. However, if you like sleeping in pitch dark I could see that might be a problem.

I'll probably buy another for a gift.

5 out of 5 stars A very good alarm clock   October 15, 2008

I bought this item about two weeks ago and i must say that it's a very alarm clock. I read many other reviews where people say that it's bad and thant it doesn't have all the options they wanted but I think it's a very well designed unit. Only thing that bothers me is that you cannot wake up to your song that you have on your SD card or the flash drive. You can turn down the brightness of the screen by pressing the big snooze button. If you don't want to keep pressing that button at night and in the morning to make the screen brighter you can use the Auto dim feature which will dim the clock whenever you want it to and turn it back to normal in the morning. Overall I think it's a good clock that is also a picture frame. You can also watch videos on it which I think is a nice feature to have.
