Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The iAudio D2 8GB Video, Photo and MP3 Portable Player can play music up to 52 hours and movie up to 10 hours. It is an ultra-stylish and feature filled miniature PMP. Its 2.5" LCD touchscreen produces an ultra-sharp picture that's perfect for viewing movies and pictures and its small size makes it more convenient for the road than larger portable media devices. The D2 has a built-in FM tuner as well as support for MP3, WMA, OGG WAV, APE and FLAC Codecs. All video files must be converted using jetAudio VX. Any other video files are not supported by D2.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but flexible unit   January 3, 2009
C. Morrow
I had major problems with uploading files to the unit. The firmware on the unit was up to date when I received it. After uploading a few albums and videos, the unit would not update file lists properly on start up and would not show the names of any of the files, so you could not tell what to play. I had to copy the files off, then clear the memory on the unit and upload the files back to it. Checked files with mp3Tag and still unit was wonky. This happened more than once in the two weeks of my trial with the device before giving it to my sister.

Had another problem at one point where the unit was ejected from my mac powerbook because the battery had gotten low, then the unit locked up whenever clicking on a menu item. Copied files off again and cleared the unit and put things back and it was working again, but there should be an option to update the file lists on the unit manually, so if it isn't doing it properly on boot, you would theoretically be able to recover from it and have the unit work properly. Besides those problems (which in my opinion are major points against the unit), I loved the fact it played FLAC files and the video on the unit worked nice.

It's a bit confusing having two USB ports on the unit when one of them isn't actually a USB port, but for A/V usage. Cowon should have picked another type of plug for A/V purposes.

I gave this to my sister as a gift for Xmas and am leary of how long she will be able to use it before running into some of the same problems I had. I purchased it for her because she has a Windows computer and a Mac laptop. Her Ipod was a bit flaky and Apple wanted $150 to fix it for the 3rd time in a little more than a year. I expect I will be taking this player back from her and giving her another one that is less tinker-er friendly and more reliable for the usual day to day stuff like an Ipod again.

I am against DRM and this seemed like a way around the requirement for it with most players, but the edges on the product are not refined in any way (Cowon could fix most of them with a firmware update).

5 out of 5 stars Great for audiobooks   November 30, 2008

I've been looking for an MP3 Player that would work for audiobooks (when I turn off the unit, I want it to resume at the same point in the book). This one does that; and, in addition is easy to operate. 'Love it!

4 out of 5 stars A truly great product, with a few flaws   November 14, 2008
Richard Jackson (Honolulu)
This is my first multimedia portable player. I did own a Creative Nomad mp3 many years ago.

Being an avid backpacker, and lover of both movies and music, I have been looking for a device that is light, has great battery life and performs well. The Cowon D2 seemed to meet all those needs based upon the many reviews that I read.

First the pros:

As many have pointed out, the battery life is quite remarkable. One night I fell asleep with a movie going and when I woke up 6 hours later, a movie was still playing and the battery meter had one bar left.

The video quality is quite good. I was concerned about the small size of the screen but the picture is so bright and clear that this concern was not an issue.

Audio quality is great with an equalizer that allows you to tweak various settings.

The cost of the player was quite reasonable with free super saver shipping.

The cons:

There is a bit of a learning curve especially with respect to encoding movies. It took me a while to find an encoder that would consistently turn out good quality videos.

The UI leaves a bit to be desired and it is a bit of a hassle to negotiate various screen to find what you want.

Lack of an easy play list for songs is a problem.

All in all, I highly recommend this jewel of a player especially for those who backpack and want to travel light.

PS: I also have a Tekkeon MP 3450 battery that can charge the unit up to three times and therefore give a total of 40 hours of video playing time. Not too shabby.

5 out of 5 stars If ipod is a beast COWON D2 is the king of the beasts. Cowon Rocks   November 11, 2008
Ujwal K. Krothapalli (Cincinnati, OH USA)
I have used a lot of popular mp3 players like ipod and creative zen but the best is Cowon D2. The wolfson audio chips are the best ,but the best of wolfson's chips are used in Cowon D2s.The player is the best for sound quality the output is so high that it can drive headphones with 100 ohms impedance with ease usually earphones have the impedance range of 16-24 ohms and video quality is mind blowing. But the style isn't great Cowon will be launching a new ultra stylish player the S9 in the next month. Well in the end this player is not for sissies who keep nagging about minor problems.

5 out of 5 stars I wonder why D2 sells so less!   October 20, 2008
Harish Raghuvaran (CT, USA)
This is the best MP3 player money can buy unless you dont wish to think too much and put your hard-earned money on an ipod.
It has every feature in the book: FM Radio, voice recording, a plethora of ways to adjust your equalizer to sound exactly the way you want it to, video playback an SD slot etc and etc but all said and done, only one reason is enough to buy this player and that is the sound quality it produces. Truly terrific.

I have a V-Moda bass frequency earbud to go along with my Cowon and i cannot seem to part with it.

Iam extrememly happy with my purchase. Bang for the buck!!
