Much better than ipod December 7, 2008 Steve (Katy, TX, USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I purchased the S738 about a month ago and have been totally pleased. The audio quality of this player with the enclosed earbuds is much better than my Apple Ipod Mini using Shure e3C earbuds. And this is at about half the cost. Note that the earphones that come with the Apples are worthless to me. I do value high quality sound, so I purchased the Shure E3C earbuds, which ended up costing more that the Ipod. Go figure. The controls on the Sony are intuitive; easily matching those from my previous ipod. The custom audio equalizer settings are handy for tuning the sound spectrum to my preferences. One other reviewer reported that his Sony takes 2 minutes to shut off. Mine is nothing like that. It shuts down after holding down the button for 5 or 10 seconds. Although I am not a FM listener, the FM tuner works great and is easy to use. The antenna is built into the earphones, so if you switch earphones, you lose the FM. The earbuds sound great. I do not like the asymmetrical cord lengths though. The built in noise cancellation system does remove some of, but not all of the noise from commercial jet aircraft. Again, change your earbuds and you lose this feature. I agree with the other report that a good sealing set of earbuds is more meaningful that the noise cancellation system. I don't believe the Sony earbuds are the best in this respect. I am enjoying the ability to show jpg files and movie clips, though I am still a novice at it. The software that allows one to drag and drop files from Itunes to the Sony memory is very quick and easy to use. Battery life = great.
7.19GB not 8GB November 30, 2008 mullarpa 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
As others have said, this is a great sounding player, with an easy to use responsive user interface. It is small and light but still feels solid. My major grip with it is that Windows reports 7.19GB not 8GB. Even using 1000 bytes in a kilobyte rather than `proper' 1024 it is only 7.7GB, which is not good enough at this price! Next problem is that if, while listening to a podcast, you accidentally press pause at the same time as pressing forward, it jumps to the start of the recording which is really annoying! I find that this happens a lot as the keys are small. The USB connector on the device is non-standard, so don't lose the supplied leads! The content transfer software works well but seems a bit slow to transfer files when compared to USB stick. Whenever you plug the unit in it pops up and you can drag and drop files on to it. The registration card encourages to you register for a free gift which in my case was 10% off accessories, so not really worth the hassle of registering for. The Media manger software requires a lot of information to register it. It seems to work ok, but takes a while to get the hang of it. The noise cancelling function only works with the supplied headphones. The really cool thing is that you can plug Walkman in and external audio source such as an in flight entertainment system and use its noise reduction facility to improve the audio. The user manual is very verbose, but not terrible helpful.
Great Player November 26, 2008 Triloron (Newtown Square, PA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was looking for an easy to use, lightweight, high quality audio player to use while working out. This player fits the bill. Sound quality is excellent, user interface is intuitive and easy to use. It's lightweight, durable and well designed. The noise cancelling earbuds work as advertised. Synching music from Windows Media Player is a snap. I have hundreds of songs loaded. Load a lot of music, put the player in random shuffle mode and you have an endless variety of music. I have made a point of using the player only during workouts, turning workouts into an entertainment event, something to look forward to! Sony has an intelli-sense function (SensMe) that analyzes the music and automatically creates playlists by genre. You can shuffle within these playlists. The automatic categorization is so-so in my opinion. It would be nice to be able to create your own playlists (like Windows Media Player) and shuffle within these playlists instead of just the SensMe playlists. Overall, highly recommended. Great quality for the price.
practical frustrations with this player November 16, 2008 Peter Schleh (Fort Myers, FL United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
As this item plays such an important part in my life, I researched extensively before this purchase. I am an audiophile and I am very satisfied with the performance here. If you decide to purchase know this: 1. the current version of the car charger for this model does not allow you to charge and listen to player at the same time. 2. It is a real pain to try to turn this unit off, it takes about two minutes of steadily holding down the power off button before the unit shuts down. 3. I just purchased an unseen Sony walkman case from Amazon today due to my frustration in transporting this device, the slightest brush against something and the unit is playing and taking down the battery reserve without the owner knowing it.4. The headphone output is not adequate to power other outstanding but less efficient headphones like the Bose Quietcomfort 2. Otherwise, it is extremely easy to use, I love the way recorded material is able to be simply added and organized, and this is a high quality, solid product.
My New Best Friend November 16, 2008 L. J. Clark (Fairfax, VA United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've avoided iPod brand MP3 players for number of reasons I won't go into here. My first large capacity player was a Creative 20GB model that had a replaceable battery (I carried a spare battery for long air trips), followed by the 30GB Zen Vision M. I'd used both with Shure E2c noise isolating earbuds. But I'd been hankering for something lighter, and with faster startup. Enter the Walkman NWZ-S738F. To say that I'm pleased is an understatement. Though screen is a bit small for video, you can do it if you need to. But coming from 30GB of storage to 8GB means that I'm a little more selective on content and will stick to music. The noise cancelling function does not work with headphones other than the MDR-NC020. Some have groused about that, but if you look at the plug for those you'll see 5 contacts (the tip, three rings, and a contact on a tab). There has to be more communication between earbuds and the player. But you can still use standard 1/8" stereo earbuds or headphones in the non-NC mode, though you'll probably want to reset the EQ -- the supplied earbuds seem very well matched to the player's output. The earbuds come with three different size ear canal sleeves so most folks should find a fit. Like: -- Great battery life. The claimed 40 hours is probably pretty illusory (I always knock 1/3 off any battery life claims), but I can get 3 days of office use on a single charge with no problem. -- Noise cancelling. I've done the office and Metro tests and I'm impressed. You can adjust the level, and turn NC on and off with a dedicated slider switch on the bottom. (I have yet to do the airplane test.) -- EQ. There are presets, and you can also custom edit your own. The selected EQ shows on the lowest line of the display, along with NC and battery state. -- Controls. The controls are logical and easy to use. You have a dedicated rocker type volume control on the upper right side that is easy to find without looking. The slider "Hold" switch locks your controls. -- Use as a stand-alone noise cancelling device. There is a clever airplane adapter (fits single or double jacks) that can be connected by a short cable to the interface jack on the bottom of the player. The supplied earbuds remain in their normal jack, and you use the player circuits to cancel noise. -- Optional CKM-NWS630 Silicone Case. Nice fit. Included clear screen protector. Little tab on bottom for lanyard attachment (for secure environments -- if out in public, don't have your player dangling from your neck like ripe fruit). -- Quick startup and navigation. Don't Like: -- The Media Manager software. Requires Windows Media Player 11. It did not work on my XP desktop computer, but I really didn't try to hunt down the problem. Anything that relies on WMP is crippled from the outset, and it is easy to transfer the files back and forth using Windows Explorer or any other file transfer utility. I rip CDs using Express Rip anyway, and use Zortam ID3 Editor for the tag info. -- Capacity. I could use a little more capacity, and there is supposed to be an NWZ-S739F (16GB) waiting in the wings in Sonyland... -- Lack of direct charging. You need to tether to your computer via the USB port unless you buy an optional charger (caution for non-computer-accompanied trips). However, if you are a Gomadic user, there is an adapter tip for their charger system. Conclusion: Nice size. A range of audio controls that produce great sound. Easy to learn and intuitive controls. Noise canceling that does not inject too much of its own noise. Great battery life.
