Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Take your living room or home office into high-gear and high-def with Toshiba's combination 17-inch SD-P7000 LCD television and DVD player. The set features a perfectly flat, amorphous-silicon (a-Si) TFT active-matrix display with 1,280 x 768 native pixel resolution and a built-in, slot-loading, progressive-scan DVD drive capable of playing not just movies but homemade DVD-R, VCD, and recordable CDs loaded with MP3 and WMA music files and JPEG images (digital photos). But the set has multiple audio/video inputs, too, for everything from a DTV set-top box to your personal computer.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (with no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be more affordable than their flat-panel plasma counterparts, which often (though not always) offer faster response times and higher contrast ratios.

Of course, you won't find any bedroom- or office-ready 17-inch plasma screens--especially not ones with DVD players built into them. Toshiba's exclusive Direct Digital Solution sends a DVD's video information to the LCD driver directly from MPEG decoder in original digital form, bypassing unnecessary digital-to-analog conversion steps, delivering the best possible picture quality. A 4-line comb filter further enhances the set's image by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Digital Cinema Progressive, another Toshiba technology, provides smooth, clear pictures from movies encoded at 24 frames per second. This feature is especially useful during highly detailed or fast-moving sequences. When activated, DCP converts and renders the 24-fps data at the progressive-scan standard of 60 fps. Toshiba's Black Level Expander increases the black threshold level, so blacks are pure black, not dark gray. This significantly improves overall picture contrast.

The rear panel sports a 15-pin D-Sub (RGB) computer input with accompanying minijack audio input, while a component-video input grants optimum connection with DTV digital satellite receivers and many digital video recorders. Standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate most other video gear (including camcorders). A coaxial RF video/antenna input also accepts feeds from older VCRs and cable boxes, while a headphone jack permits private or late-night listening.

Want to listen in surround sound? Activate the set's E.A.M. circuit (Enhanced Audio Mode) for simulated surround sound from its twin titanium speakers (3 watts per channel x 2) or feed 5.1-channel Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals (depending on your disc) to a compatible AV receiver and multichannel speaker system.

Designed for tabletop or wall-mounting applications, the SD-P7000 has VESA compatible mounting holes in the 100mm design format.

What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good all-in-one solution, but has some design flaws   September 21, 2004

Despite the title, this is NOT a portable DVD player. This is a 17'' wide-screen LCD TV with a built-in slot-loading DVD player on the side. It is the only model I found at an affordable price that offered this feature. There is a Zenith and an LG that I am aware of, but those sell for much more.

The good:

Picture quality is good for movies, ok for cable tv
Intergraded DVD player is ideal for wall-mounting. Reduces the number of wires and also the need for an equipment rack
Nice TV/DVD combo for bedroom or a small space

The bad:

Cost - a separate LCD screen & DVD player can be found for less
The DVD mechanism is noisy
Zoom function is useless only available for DVD (not TV) and the zoom text-dialog never clears from the screen, so black bars are inevitable.
There are no direct buttons to switch inputs, must cycle through 4-5 inputs to switch between TV and DVD
It is not possible to set screen size at 4:3 for TV and 16:19 for DVD. Must manually switch every time
The remote feels cheap

Conclusion:

While not without flaws, this is a good all-in-one package to use wall-mounted at a reasonable price.
