Amazon.com Product Description
Enjoy brilliant imagery and lifelike colors with the 42-inch Toshiba 42DPC85 plasma flat-screen television. This EDTV (Enhanced Definition TV) set is capable of displaying not only television signals in 480p (480-pixel progressive) but also from video sources such as progressive-scan DVD players (using the component video inputs). It displays video at 852 x 480 pixels, and while it can connection to HD-compatible cable/satellite set-top boxes, it will only display those HD input signals at its 480p native resolution. It has a high 1500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.)

A 3D Y/C comb filter (4 MB, 10-bit with Vertical Contour Correction) further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). The HD Dynamic Contrast feature increases contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images. The intelligent circuitry analyzes both the dark and bright areas of the picture, and separately optimizes the dynamic range in each area of the picture. Toshiba's PixelPure AT (Adaptive Technology) includes Motion Adaptive De-Interlacing, Adaptive MPEG Processing, Adaptive Contrast Enhancement, and Adaptive Color Enhancement--all critical elements to deliver a consistently high quality picture.

This set has two built-in speakers that produce 20 watts of power (10 watts per channel). The SRS WOW audio technology consists of three separate sound expanding systems, which work together to extract "buried" highs and lows. The three systems are SRS 3D, TruBass, and FOCUS. SRS 3D creates a three dimensional sound field from just two speakers, thus giving the listener the feeling of hearing a multi speaker surround sound system. TruBass produces a powerful, yet low, frequency sound by utilizing a process called psychoacoustics. And FOCUS directs the energy from the speakers of the television set in a vertical direction up towards the listener's ears. The 42DPC85 includes the following audio and video connection options:

  • Composite audio/video (RCA): 3 (1 front)
  • S-Video: 2 (1 front)
  • Component video: 2
  • HDMI audio/video: 1
  • PC VGA: 1
  • RF: 2

1 out of 5 stars Yeah- same story here   January 3, 2008

A friend of mine had the TV for a little over a year when the screen went blank. He read all the reviews and decided it wasn't worth repairing and gave it to me. I had it serviced to see if it wasn't too expensive of a repair- found out theres no such thing as a cheap fix when it comes to plasmas. The Y board was toast and $790.00 later its fixed and looks decent for a 480p TV. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't blow up in another year. Regardless of what happens, after reading many reviews and feedback regarding Toshibas customer service I will never purchase another TV from the company.

1 out of 5 stars Blank screen   November 14, 2007

I have the same problem with a blank screen. I have owned this TV for a little less than two years and yesterday the screen went blank. I called the customer service center and said they have no idea what I am talking about. Do not buy this TV......

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!!!!   September 25, 2007
Monica Winkler (Vernon, CT USA)
Ok here is my story. I bought this TV about a year and a half ago. On February 14th of this year I started getting green dots all over. A local service company came and took my TV for 1 month and still not fixed. They came back out a month later to evaluate the TV and said they had to order parts (that was back in May). Here we are almost October 1st no answers...the service center says the parts are back ordered, Toshiba keeps referring me to new places. I told Toshiba to get me a new TV (as another reviewer stated they received) or prepare for legal action. I have an extended warranty and believe it or not the TV went bad 1 day before the factory warranty expired thus all of this falls under the 1 year warranty. Toshiba is a crappy company that keeps blowing me off and will not answer my requests. My advice to you is spend a bit more and get a better product.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This TV!!!!!   August 28, 2007

Just as all the other reviews state, two months out of warranty the screen went black and everything else worked. Service center wants $589 to fix plus the $85 to look at it and Toshiba washed thier hands of it.

1 out of 5 stars Never again   August 2, 2007

We have had this T.V for a year and a half. Of course the warranty is only a year. We are seeing green red and white spots over every picture. When you are watching something with dark scenes especially, it looks like a white haze is over the picture. It is there constantly. For a split second when a program comes back on it is clear, and you can see how great the picture would look ( HD ), and then the haze appears. I am VERY disappointed for the price we paid for it that this is happening. I will never again buy a Toshiba television.
