Amazon.com Product Description You don't have to take out a second mortgage to enjoy crisply colorful, high definition-quality video and audio with the 32-inch Sony Trinitron KD32FS170 flat CRT television. The visually flat FD Trintron tube minimizes annoying glare from light sources, enhancing contrast, and corner-to-corner detail is rendered more accurately because images aren't distorted by a curved screen. It features both built-in analog and digital tuners, which enables you to receive digital ATSC programming via terrestrial signals (over-the-air) for watching highly detailed HD broadcasts. You'll get great picture reproduction from compatible cable/satellite set-top boxes and DVD players using the three-jack component video (Y/Pb/Pr) inputs, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. The KD32FS170 has a 4:3 aspect ratio and produces standard definition, 480i (interlaced) resolution, but the picture quality will be greatly enhanced using the component video connection. Also, this set provides a wide screen mode for watching digital 16:9 (widescreen) broadcasts in their original widescreen format, or you can choose the zoom function to fill the 4:3 aspect ratio screen. The digital 3-line comb filter compares each horizontal scanning line with the lines above and below, separating black-and-white detail from color information to virtually eliminate edge crawls and rainbow effects while enhancing horizontal resolution and minimizing video noise. Sony's exclusive Clear Edge VM (velocity modulation) technology enhances higher frequency signals and sharpens the picture definition to give objects a crisp, clear edge. It also offers the following convenience features: - Parental Control (V-Chip) helps parents monitor what their children watch on TV by establishing rating limits.
- Favorite Channel function enables you to set up and select from up to five of your favorite channels.
- Program Palette presets offer combinations of picture settings engineered to make the most of specific entertainment types (choose from Vivid, Standard, Movie and Sports).
- Front panel controls allows access to the on-screen menus without the use of a remote control.
- Front composite A/V inputs let you quickly connect video games, camcorders, or stereo/mono equipment.
- Meets Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency.
This set has built-in stereo speakers that produce 5 watts of power per channel (for 10 watts of total power) as well as Dolby Digital for 5.1-channel surround sound. It offers the following connection options: - Composite (RCA audio/video): 2 inputs (1 front)
- S-Video: 1 input (audio connection uses composite left/right audio jacks)
- Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 1 input (with left/right audio jacks)
- RF: 1 analog VHF/UHF and 1 digital ATSC

Great bargain while Sony discontinues the CRTs June 12, 2007 ROBERT M SCOTT (Independence, KY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I went into a walk in store today and picked up this unit for $539 (The store employees picked it up and put it in my mini-van). It was the last factory sealed unit in the store. I like the non-hi-def picture tube because it does not magnify the resolution limitations of standard DVDs and retail VHS movies, like the Hi-Definition sets do. Yet, the picture quality is stunning. My parents are still using their Sony 32" CRT, they bought 15 years ago, and the picture quality is still excellent. We don't watch broadcasts, just movies from the public library, Netflix, and our ever-growing home library of DVD movies. Now that Sony has completely dropped CRTs from their product line up, you may be able to find some remaining in inventory, that are priced to move!
A 250-POUND GORRILLA... February 15, 2007 Zhe Man Tong (San Francisco, CA. USA) 2 out of 14 found this review helpful
With 1080p LCDs and plasmas already available on the market right now, WHY would you still wanna buy this contraption? It's like 2 feet thick and weighs 250 pounds... Ouch! Just imagine having to haul this massive thing up and down the stairs in a few years from now! With the packaging materials included, this thing is gonna weigh more than 250 pounds. Consider renting a FORKLIFT if you must buy this TV!
Great TV January 12, 2007 Lance Deutscher TV is working great, Picture quality is excellent. Only problem we had was the supplier charged for expedited shipping, and the unit was delivered in 10 days. Yes the tv weights 200lbs, but the supplier knows this and if they are unable to deliver expedited, that shouldn't be an option and the customer should never be charged.
Best CRT picture I've ever seen January 10, 2007 P. Matos (USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Pro's - Stunning picture (especially with digital media),This is the best non-HD picture I've ever seen (I find LCD TV's to have cold unreal color & contrast). This TV went for over $1200 originally, so $600 is a steal. Plus you have Sony Quality & service. I've owned a lot of TV's & Sony lasts the longest. Picture is very adjustable, many settings. Cons - over 200 pounds, very heavy & bulky, took 2 STRONG men to move it. (quality picture tubes & transformers are heavy!) costs $200 to ship, small cramped remote, always hitting the wrong key. Sound is good nothing special. At first I was going to rate at 4 stars but the picture is so good (thats why you buy a TV) I had to give it 5. Picture tubes are disapearing, This is one of the best & last.
Exceptional Sony 36 inch Stereo Color TV October 5, 2006 gobirds2 (New England) 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
Have you been shopping lately? Standard 4:3 screen aspect ratio CRT Television sets are becoming a thing of the past. One major audio/video retailer in my area no longer carries standard CRT TV sets. In other words they carry no tube TV sets, just flat screen sets. They only carry 16:9 (screen aspect ratio) LCD and Plasma sets! I find this sudden transition incredible, unbelievable and very naive. I prefer a large 4:3 CRT screen. For me they are much brighter and more vivid. The Sony KD36FS170 36" FD Trinitron WEGA Hi-Scan Digital Television is an excellent 4:3 set. It has a Digital 3-line comb filter that increases picture resolution and reduces noticeable dot-crawl, which is visible on less expensive 36-inch brands. It has Rear audio and composite video inputs as well as an S-video input for DVD, Laser Disc players and Super-VHS recorders for higher picture resolution. The picture on this TV set is excellent
