Amazon.com Product Description The Sony Weather Band Radio is not your typical weather and AM/FM radio. This bright yellow, water-resistant radio comes with a built-in power generator, protected controls and a two-position light for flashlight use or a soft glow. The weather band radio allows the station to be tuned before it's put away for emergency use, and will stay in that position until it's changed by the user. Your settings are safer with tuning control for the weather band located in the battery compartment. The frequency range lets you tune into weather channels 1-7 as well as standard AM/FM broadcast. With a built-in power generator, you can manually recharge the internal Ni-MH battery. One minute of cranking at the optimum rate shown by the green LED charging indicator provides the user with up to 60 minutes of AM radio, 40 minutes of FM radio or 15 minutes of lights. The LED indicator is illuminated when turning the power generator handle. This unit can also be powered by 2 "C" batteries (not supplied). In addition to being a radio, the two-light setting lets you use this unit as a flashlight or a soft light. In the flashlight setting, the LED provides a bright light that can be used to illuminate an object or help guide the user when walking. The soft light is a low level light that adds illumination or comfort light when a group is gathered around it. Other technical features include telescopic and built-in ferrite bar antennas and a 3.5mm earphone jack. Easy to locate with its bright yellow color, this radio also comes equipped with a convenient shoulder strap for carrying.

Decent but not perfect October 30, 2007 Abester (USA) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I was impressed with the emergency lighting and radio capabilities by simply cranking the generator handle. There's a small rechargeable battery inside that takes the charge from cranking the handle to give you several minutes of light and radio reception. Installing a pair of alkaline C batteries makes the radio and lighting much easier to use (no cranking necessary) but it's nice to have the generator crank in case the C batteries go dead. The light at the very top is a single white LED with shiny reflector. It's not super bright but sufficient while you find your real flashlight. The other light provides diffused soft lighting and helps to illuminate the radio dial to aide in tuning. AM and FM reception are pretty good and easy to tune with the external tuning knob. However, the weather radio section was a bit disappointing to me for a couple reasons. Unlike many crystal controlled or synthesized weather radios that have 7 discrete frequency selections via a selector switch to choose the weather radio channel, the Sony has a small analog tuning knob inside the battery compartment. You have to carefully tune and center the station in order to get decent reception. If you move out of your local area and need to find another weather radio channel, you have to open the battery compartment and retune. Pretty lame! Otherwise a decent radio with very nice build quality and feel.
