Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Thin, but powerful, the Sony KDS-R50XBR1 Grand WEGA SXRD Rear Projection HDTV is equipped with SXRD technology and offers a brilliant, colorful image pleasing to any pair of eyes. SXRD technology employs three Silicon X-tal Reflective Display panels, which aid in the response time of image changes and movement. Each one of these panels is associated to a primary color: red, blue or green. These panels combine their monochromatic colors into one creating a single, full color image that is displayed onto the screen via an energy-efficient high output lamp (RGB Image 1920 x 1080). Other features of the KDS-R50XBR1 include WEGA GATE Easy Operation Guide for easy channel and television function use as well as CineMotion technology, which provides reverse 3:2 pull down technology for smoother picture movement when playing back movies or other video sources on film. Sony's WEGA Engine system also minimizes signal distortion providing you with the best HD picture and sound for hours of viewing pleasure.

1 out of 5 stars LEMON! LEMON! LEMON!   December 7, 2008
raja99 (Palm Harbor, FL)
I bought the Sony 50" KDS-R50XBR1 television at Circuit City a couple of years ago. Within 6 months of my purchase, I began to notice a "yellowish" discoloration creeping up the right hand side of the screen. At first, I thought the screen was just dirty, but repeated cleanings with a soft clothe did nothing. The discoloration continued to get bigger. Fortunately, I purchased an extended warranty and home maintenance. The repairman had no idea what the problem was, so they ended up taking the TV into the shop so a so-called SONY maintenance expert could look at it. Finally, after 2 long months they brought the set back, telling me the problem was a bad screen, which they replaced. Now, less than a year later the "yellowish" discoloration is back, only it is worse and covers a larger portion of the screen. Considering I paid nearly $5,000 for this set, you can only imagine my anger. I have always purchased Sony products (stereo equipment, VCR, DVD, etc.) and have never had any problems. I have now lost complete confidence in Sony products due to this. If that is not bad enough, I bought this set thinking it was a 1080p television. Well, it is NOT. I was looking at moving to Blu-Ray DVD, which requires a 1080p TV. So, hooking up a Blu-Ray DVD player with this TV you would not see any difference than you do with a regular DVD player. I feel like suing Sony, not just because of all the technical issues, but also because of the false, misleading advertising claiming this was a 1080p television.

5 out of 5 stars Optical Block Problems   September 7, 2008
Robert D. Keller (Acworth, Ga. USA)
Bought one in Feb'06 and the green glob showed up in May, by August we had a new one. It was replaced by Best Buy. And by the way, they were FANTASTIC responding to our needs! I hope nothing happens. We looked at other brands, even Plasma and LCD, just in case. But nothing compared to this Sony. I don't see spending that much just to hang a TV on a wall. Sonys reputation I'm sure is affected. They did get rid of the Optical BUG problem, and they'd still be flying off the shelves like they were when they first came out had this not occured. It's not just another black 'Brick in the Wall'(pardon the pun). It's more like a unique peice of art. I THANK Sony for the chance to buy this technology at a decent price!.............UPDATE 10-8-08,Green Glob appeared, optical block replaced by Best Buy with the upgraded Glass Optical Lens. Perfect picture once again, and permanent fix this time.... completely happy!!

I've owned this TV since 10/2005, and it worked great until about a month ago. Now the greenish tint that others complain about has arrived. I do have an extended warrenty, and Sony did send a repairman to check my set. Yes, the light engine is out of whack. The service guy said it is covered by warrenty, but he isn't sure if Sony will replace the light engine or provide another set. We'll see what happens next.

3/7/08 Sony says it will repair my set with a new light engine. Is that engine going to be more dependable than the original one that has failed on so many sets? The local TV service person says the new light engine has been fixed. Sony discovered the cause of the problem and fixed it. I hope so. This TV offers a great picture--when it's not tinted green. We'll see what happens next.

3/11/08 My set has been repaired and it works great now. No charge for the repair. Local TV repair service did a did good job and returned my set quickly. Will the new light engine hold up better than the original? We'll see what happens next.

1 out of 5 stars It WAS too good to be true.   October 18, 2007

When "everyone" (friends, co-workers, consumer reviews) said the Sony Wega SXRD was THE BEST HDTV, I splurged and spent $2600 in January 2007 on a KDS-R50BR1 as a retirement gift for myself. The picture wasn't as sharp as I expected but I blamed it on the antiquated cable wiring in my apartment building. Nine months later the screen went black and the "fun" began - scheduling and waiting for repairmen, sending the set to the repair shop, waiting for part after back-ordered part to be tried in the set. After eight weeks of repeated phone calls to the dealer, repair shop and Sony, Sony finally gave me a replacement - a REFURBISHED set, the same model as the piece of junk that I bought. What a nightmare! Now that I'm learning about all the problems others are having I'm just waiting for it to start all over again. My confidence in Sony is shot.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Design, This model on recall list!!!   October 7, 2007
M. harris (valley village, california United States)
This model and the 60 " version
are on the recall list. Stay away
from this one. Defective light engine
which is the heart of the TV. Just had
mine replaced now the entire picture has
blue hue. This is a $1000 plus repair
Sony is only covering this part for another
year. Now I have a worked on $3000 plus piece
of junk. My $150 Target tube TV gets a better
overall picture. The underpaid Sony Reps could
care less, Just like upper management. Going
to sell this junk at a deep discount don't need
the aggravation with Sony or their service techs.
