5 out of 5 stars A Power Shredder it IS!   January 6, 2009
Lewis P. Vannier (Georgia)
This is one great power shredder. Great safety features. It is well worth the extra money I paid for it. It shreds credit cards, old DVDs, and CDs and several sheets of paper without the motor slowing down one bit. Buy one and you will agree it is the best shredder you have or will ever own. It is almost as good as the shredder at work, which we paid $1500.00 for.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy duty and durable   December 27, 2008

We purchased this shredder a year ago and have been using it daily since then. So far, we've only had to oil it once and it is working as well as the day we bought it.

It quickly shreds handfuls of paper and cuts them into very small pieces. The sensor-stop feature works well, preventing cats and kids from getting their little paws into the slot while it's shredding.

This is a HEAVY shredder. You won't want to carry it around the house, so make sure you place it in a convenient spot from the get-go. We use a paper grocery bag inside the bin to catch the shreds and then toss it into the recycling like that. Couldn't be easier.

Definitely recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Don't leave this shredder on Auto-On!   December 8, 2008
Janabi (Northwest US)
The Auto-On feature of this shredder should NOT be left on, or it will burn out. This isn't clear in the directions. A customer rep at Fellowes actually told me that leaving the shredder set to "Auto-on" is also a fire hazard. That isn't mentioned in the directions, either. I'll steer clear of Fellowes next time...

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive   December 6, 2008

I have had a Staples-special non-crosscut shredder for several years, and sensitive documents were building up since it was such a pain in the neck to use. This one arrived within a couple days and I've almost completed the backlog already. Let me describe some features of the unit:

1) It is surprisingly heavy. The power unit on top is maybe 20 pounds. To me that implies a lot of durable metal parts rather than plastic.

2) There is actually a separate stand and basket so that you can empty the basket without removing the power head. The "stand" actually looks like a basket with the front missing, and the actual basket pushes inside from the front. Very nice given the weight.

3) The basket has a transparent viewing port (you can see it on the picture) that lets you tell when it is full.

4) The power unit can sense when the basket is not there and will not turn on. (You have to put the basket in carefully to be sure to engage the switch, btw)

5) It is surprisingly quiet, especially compared to my old one. And yes, it does eat staples. With no noticable extra noise.

6) There is a little paper gauge so you can tell when you have about the right amount of paper in hand. That's the black thing in the picture right in front of the paper inlet.
------------------------
The best thing about it to me is that the crosscut shreds coming out pack much better than the full-length strips that my old one made. I got quite a bit of paper into one basketfull. I do recommend emptying the basket when it gets up to the viewport. "Just a few more" as I did ends up spilling some when you take the basket out.

I don't see any reason to buy the special bags. Yes they are the perfect size for the basket, and yes, a bag is a good thing. However, I think you could use a regular cheap garbage bag just as easily. I plan to take my shreds to the paper recycling in town and empty the bag and reuse it. (My paper recycling is mixed type that you dump in a big dumpster; if you have newspapers only and have to stack them, you probably won't be allowed to do this.

2 out of 5 stars Ok shredder but has issues   December 3, 2008

This shredder looks good and if you clean it often, works well. But it has a couple of issues that makes me worried about using it and give it the two stars. #1 - It shreds paper into small pieces but when you go and look and the pieces, sometimes you find one about 3/4 inch thick, I think it has to do with the edges but my previous no-brand shredders never did that so I don't understand why a more expensive model would. #2 - I don't think it can shred at specified capacity and I wouldn't shred more than a 2-3 sheets max. #3 - It is out to either burn down my house or shred my fingers. It doesn't happen often enough for me to return it and be confident they'll see it and honor the warranty but once I came into the house hearing it running and it was obviously w/o any paper and all clean and running very hot. And while I keep it in off mode when not in use since then, I forgot to do that at least once and got shocked when it just came on when I was in the room. I also worry that I may accidentally forget to turn it off again and either have it running hot again or worse yet have it come on when cleaning/emptying it. The second one at office has the same #1 and #2 issues but no problems w/ the automatic feature. p.s. Amazon's tag suggests "a great safe shredder". Mine isn't, also just noticed the same problem reported by another user..
