Amazon.com Product Description
Get maximum enjoyment from your television and DVD playback with the 46-inch JVC LT46FN97 LCD HDTV, which offers a native progressive resolution of 1920 x 1080p. Because 1080p provides twice the resolution of the high definition 720p or 1080i displays found in most HDTVs today, you'll get more vivid pictures--no matter the scene or content. The LT46FN97 delivers outstanding picture quality thanks to JVCOs Genessa 32-bit CPU video processing, part of JVC's 5th generation DIST (Digital Image Scaling Technology), which seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at full high definition 1080p. Standard definition signals are improved through new Natural Progressive IP conversion, improved scaler performance and a new PLL system that improves the performance of a composite signal.

The Genessa video processor also includes a Digital Video Noise Reduction that reduces the "graininess" for both analog and digital video source, a Block Noise Suppressor that detects and eliminates Oblock noiseO, a Mosquito Noise Suppressor that eliminates noise in low bit-rate signals without degrading the image, and a 3D Y/C comb filter with DTV Cross Color Eliminator that uses an advanced 10-bit 3D Y/C separation process to eliminate cross color and dot interference that is imbedded in older source material.

You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the dual HDMI or dual component connections. Its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception (via component or HDMI inputs), and it includes a standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

This set features a 16:9 aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing angle, 500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and 1000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.)

The Natural Cinema feature performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

The set's Digital Super Detail (DSD) correction technology works with the Natural Progressive Circuitry to reproduce completely focused pictures, whether the image is still or highly active. A 5-point Color Management System (CMS) compensates for color range limitations and ensures JVC colors are reproduced with dimension and vivid detail. Other video processing and display features include digital video noise reduction, white character correction circuitry, five video status modes (theater, dynamic, game, standard, and TheaterPro D6500K), and seven aspect ratio modes with EZ Fill feature that enables you to choose the aspect ratio to suit your preferences. Other convenience features include a multi-function timer and standard sleep timer, 10-minute auto shut-off, front panel lock, high-speed channel changer, and V-Chip parental controls.

The audio performance of this set is improved through the use of MaxxBass, digital signal processing that extends the perceived bass performance, and a built-in parametric equalizer for more accurate frequency response. The built-in, front-firing speakers produce 10 watts of power per channel for 20 watts of total power, and it also offers virtual surround sound, advanced tone correction and a volume limiter. It offers the following connection options:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 3 in
  • S-Video: 2 in
  • Component video: 2 in
  • HDMI: 2 in
  • FireWire (IEEE1394): 2
  • PC VGA: 1 in
  • RF: 2 in
  • Audio output: 1 optical digital out, 1 headphone
Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

2 out of 5 stars In-home warranty not honored, TV in repair center for two-months now.   April 8, 2008

When we received this TV, we loved it. Within sixty days the smart port quit working and before the warranty was out the TV begin to "Marble-ize" (what the repair center calls it). I said it looked like mother of the pearl shining in the sun.

Anyway, I am now in a battle with them to try and get my TV home, a new TV issued or my money back. They would not honor the In-home Warranty, so I a have been out a living room TV for almost two months. They can't seem to fix this TV and have replaced the same part three times (I learned that they also use refurbished parts to fix our brand new under warranty TV's and electronics). This is not going to build any JVC love between us and them.

Anyway it is still not fixed and now they think it might be a cable instead. In other words they don't know what is wrong with it and unless I get a lawyer soon, I am going to get screwed on this deal for sure. In the meantime, and too late, I searched the Internet and found that there are people in the heart of big cities that are told the in-home warranty will not be honored, because, like us, it is too far too drive. I don't seem to be the only one having major problems with them.

So, I am not a happy customer. I would not recommend this TV or JVC to anyone and I will never purchase from them again.

5 out of 5 stars Great TV!   January 24, 2007

I purchased this TV in December, and have found it to be excellent in every way. My HD cable box goes into one HDMI input, and my DVD player goes into the other. The picture quality out of the box was quite good, and it was even better after some adjustments using test patterns. Since I don't have any 1080p inputs, the 1080i limitation was not an issue for me.

While I use an external receiver for audio, the built in audio is surprisingly good as well.

I would highly recommend this set.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't ask for more!!!   January 11, 2007

I have had this TV for a month and have been extremely pleased. The color and clarity are amazing. Learning to use the remote and menus was not as easy as I might have expected but it did not take long to learn. I did a lot of research before purchasing this TV. Everything I found pointed to this model as having all the things I was looking for. Then when I received my 'Consumer Reports' magazine and this model (smaller screen) was the top rated, that sealed my decision. I could not find this model locally but I was extremely pleased with my purchasing experience with 'Amazon.com'. The price was a good value and the free shipping service added to the value. It arrived in one week.

I could not have asked for more for my money!

5 out of 5 stars Great TV, , , really love this thing   December 30, 2006

We have had our 46 inch JVC for 2 months and it just gets better as it goes along. It handles SD programs very well, of course depending on the quality of the signal. Movies are wonderful to watch on this. Almost 3D like appearance.

Good remote, good menus and the sound is very good too for a built in system. You can spend more money but I don't think you'll find a better TV of this type and size.

Update: We have had this TV for 2 months now and it just gets better as it goes along. Really! The picture is better with better fleshtones and I haven't spent much time at all adjusting it.

I was initially concerned that it does not accept 1080p signal. That really won't make any difference as all but computer and some game signals going to it will be 1080i. This TV has an excellent de-interlacer in it so it will display the signal at 1080p and do it as well as any other set out there. So for my family, this is not a problem.

1 out of 5 stars Neither HDMI Input Works; Poor Customer Support from Amazon, JVC and so-called warranty under additional "Service Contract"   December 9, 2006

First of all, I was very excited to get this TV when I had done significant research regarding resolution, color, response rate and price. To get a 1080p TV of this size at this price was almost too good to be true. Alas, it was, as BOTH HDMI inputs do not work. I have two DVD players with HDMI inputs, as well as two satellite receivers with HDMI connections, and tried the TV with all of them. Buying an HD TV without the capability to use the HDMI inputs is worthless.

Hoping that the additional service contract would come in handy, I called to see about getting the TV repaired or a replacement sent out. After trying to deny coverage completely for the item being "used at a business" (it was actually just shipped to my business), the service company then said that there was no coverage under their "2 year" plan during year one EXCEPT FOR power surge coverage. In essence nothing, nada, for your $325.

Do yourself a favor and think twice, three times, or more when you are going to spend this much on an item. It simply isn't worth the hassle.
