The Humminbird 717 Fish Finder is for serious recreational anglers ready for a step up from traditional fish finders, while still retaining incredible ease of use. The 717 is compact, but full of already built-in capabilities, with the ability to add advanced accessories, making it the perfect companion for your fishing outings. The Humminbird 717 uses DualBeam PLUS sonar, selectable between 20- and 60-degree beams, or simultaneous operation to deliver both wide coverage and better bottom definition up to 1,000 feet with a target separation of only 2.5 inches. This fish finder includes real-time sonar at up to 40 times per second, and Sonar Echo Enhancement sensitive enough to track a jig to over 40 feet. This unit's high-speed, micro-dynamic transducer is reliable up to 70 mph, and even includes water temperature and is speed capable. The 717 has an ultra high-contrast, 5-inch FSTN LCD screen with 320 x 320 lines of resolution in 16-level grayscale for crisp images with high visibility, and an adjustable backlight. I was pleased with my purchase of a Humminbird 717 from "Beach Audio". They had one of the lowest prices, and they shipped the item within a day or two of the order date. It was packaged well. I would gladly buy from them again.
The Humminbird 717 is a fairly complex fish finder. It was easy to install and it appears to have great capabilities, once you learn how to operate it. Considering how sophisticated this unit is, the instruction manual is very poorly written, especially if the buyer is a first-time fish finder user. Much of the learning process was "trial and error" on my part. My brother has a 717, and he said the same thing about the instructions. (I wonder if "Rocket Scientists" could understand these directions.)
I've used the 717 for about one month, and I probably am using about 40% of its capabilities. Eventually, I think that it will be worth every penny. I wish the screen were larger, but it's adequate.
