Amazon.com Product Description
The Forerunner 101 offers athletes an easy-to-read display and integrated GPS sensor that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data--all in one compact unit that straps to your wrist. It's a lightweight, accurate training assistant with performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more.

And because it is a high quality Garmin GPS device, you get many of the features GPS users have come to rely on, such as precise latitude, longitude, and altitude data. The Forerunner 101 is easy to use right out of the box and it delivers the benefits of GPS technology.

Although it lacks the rechargeable battery and PC connectivity features of the Forerunner 201, the 101 retains all of the other great features of the 201, at an even more affordable price. The Virtual Partner feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

Almost as important as the training device itself are the accessories to integrate it with your active lifestyle. If you're into cycling, the best way to keep an eye on your GPS while you ride is with a bike mount bracket that straps to the handlebars of your bike, motorcycle, or whatever you're traveling with for easy viewing.

Other Forerunner 101 features:

  • Mark specific locations, and then look-up and navigate to these points using an electronic map.
  • Amount of calories burned can be tracked and calculated over the course of a workout.
  • Lap history--such as lap time, lap distance, and average pace--can be stored for 5000 laps.
  • Performance data can be automatically archived and calculated to provide an accurate record.
  • Automated stopwatch provides auto-lap and auto-pause features.
  • Pace whistle sounds alert when you begin traveling slower or faster than your desired pace.
  • Time and distance whistles can be set to sound when you reach a specified duration or distance in your workout.

Auto Menu: Timer pauses when you stop running. Auto lap logs your performance over a predetermined distance.

History: Review training history by day or week.

Map: Navigate back to the start or to a stored location.

Virtual Partner: Set time, pace, and distance goals, and train with a "virtual partner."

What's in the box:
Forerunner 101 unit, wrist strap, manual, and quickstart guide.

2 out of 5 stars If your not serious about running...   December 31, 2008
Nick Juliano (Suffolk County, New York)
I run varsity cross country for high school and bought this watch thinking what most of you are thinking. However, as great as the concept might seem, the watch is better in theory than practice. The GPS antenna is very flaky. Good if you live in the great plains or something, but if there's a tree near by then you might be in trouble. The watch tries to compensate for the week signal but is very inaccurate with its compensation. This version is from 2001 so it might be time to go for a newer, smaller, slightly more expensive watch. The only real reason I wanted this is to know my mile pace when I'm running, but when the distance is off, so is the pace. I was running with the fastest runner in Suffolk County (one of the larger ones in NY) and it read 10 mins/mile. Then shortly after a drastically opposite result. Great programming, bad GPS.
On a final note, the thing isn't big enough to bother you too much, a little uncomfortable, but you will stick out like a sore thumb.
My advise is perhaps looking into the Nike+ for your ipod. Or if you hate running with an ipod as I do, then the Nike+ Sportband. Also the newer Garmin Forerunner.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!!   November 25, 2008
M. Slaymaker
I just started running about 7 months ago and this is one of the best purchases I have made. I feel like I have so much freedom to just run where ever I want and at the end of my run I know exactly how far I went, how long it took, how many calories were burned and it keeps track so I can compare runs and see if I am improving on time and distance. I think it is a must have for any runner/walker. I would definitely recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars got me off the treadmill   November 7, 2008
Melinda L. Price
I mostly ran on my treadmill because I like to know how far and fast I am running. The Garmin forerunner 101 is absolutely amazing. Turn it on and it keeps track of time, distance, and pace. The signal is strong and the batteries last a long time. Now I'm running mostly outdoors because of this device. It's a must buy! Why did I wait so long?

4 out of 5 stars Basic but enough   November 2, 2008
tmatsu (Honolulu, Hawaii United States)
This is my 3rd Forerunner. I used 201,205 and recently bought this 101. Battery in my 201 became weak and started to lose power during the run. My 205 have the same thing now and also does not start up. Since most of the problem seems to start from the battery and the connectors over the years, I decided to go with 101 which does not have any exposed connectors and use batteries which you can (or I should say "must") replace yourself. This one seems to find the satellites faster and hold them better than the 201 which I bought when it first came out. I use a pair of rechargeable 1000mAh NiMH AAA batteries which you can specify in the set-up menu. Battery seems to last over 10 hours. Also, it was cheaper to buy this compared to sending the old ones to Garmin for an repair. I lost the capability to import the data into my PC but I am happy for the price I paid for. I hope they modify the straps because if you don't rinse after the run it will start stinking.

5 out of 5 stars I'll never run without a Garmin again   October 31, 2008
Russell G. Smith
The Garmin is a great product. It is easy to learn (very "intuitive") and makes it so much easier to run new routes while keeping up with distance and pace.

I ran a great time in my first 10k race thanks to my Garmin. I'm relatively new to running and therefore can't pace myself naturally. The Garmin allowed me to tell myself to slow down at times and to speed up at others.
