not a happy camper September 12, 2008 Charles Interrante (USA) First let me start off by saying this is a refuberished unit i bought. The box it came in was in bad shape and i would not sign for it until i made sure it was not damaged. One of the first things i look for is the manual and there was none.I called Toshiba, they told me that the unit was no longer being made in other words canceled. When i asked about the manual i was told they didn't have one. What they did was give me a list of about ten numbers to call, all electronics stores. On about the fifth number i found one for a price of 28.50.What was i to do? i had to have one.Next thing was the wireless remote.I see now why they also include a wired one to.the wireless is horrible. It looks like a kids toy.The battery goes in from a little slide on the bottom if you can get it open without breaking it.After a good hour i got it in an it worked for about five minutes and it quit.I called Toshiba and told them i was sending all of the unit back they agreed to send me another one. Also their is a offer to get a free set of wall mounted brackets.don't try to get them because the offer is no longer available. All in all it is a very good player and i do recommend it.It is at least a four or even five star unit, but with every else that happen three stars.Update 09-17-08-the 27.50 Manual came today and i can tell people i am not inpressed.Remember if you buy it refurbished it WON'T have a MANUAL.UPDATE 9-28-08 The d.v.d. player quit today.Think twice be for buying. It also needs an update that i haven't gotten yet.Update i sent it back.
Yes, We KNOW Blu-Ray won! However....! July 1, 2008 gochr1s (VA/DC) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Enough of the warnings threats about HD-DVD being "dead technology"! We KNOW already! That said, I decided to go ahead purchase this player because, frankly, since Blu-Ray has been crowned King of All Things HD du jour, there's zero incentive for Sony and its minions to make BD players discs AFFORDABLE! Moreover, there are still a number movies offered ONLY in HD-DVD....GOOD movies (The Matrix Trilogy most notably)! Lastly, the private seller i bought mine from sent a DOZEN HD-DVD discs for free...deal was too good to pass up. br / br /As for the player itself, it works beautifully and looks appropriately STUNNING, even on my soon-to-be ancient Sharp 32" 720p. When I do upgrade to a 1080p, I'll have this player and, eventually, I shall hand over $400~ to the Evil Empire (Sony) for a PS3 to have Blu-Ray capability too. br / br /Some little nitpicks: the player takes a good long time to load a disc...we're talking upwards of 30 seconds. Also, out of the box, certain HD-DVD's would not play, but a download of the latest firmware update fixed that in a snap (took maybe 20mins total); and it's turning out to be the vast majority of HD-DVD discs don't allow for repeat play (i.e. over over non-stop, which is what I usually do to fall asleep at night). br / br /In conclusion, yes, it is the "loser" in the HD-disc "war"...however, it IS technology that WORKS, looks TERRIFIC, and the movies offered (albeit in somewhat limited variety) are INEXPENSIVE (many here on Amazon are under $14). I'm happy with mine, and if you choose to "cover all your bases" with regards to HD movie discs, this is a relatively cheap bonus for your entertainment center.
HD-A20 June 5, 2008 B. A. Dupree (Michigan) Good player. I've had no real problems, and the video and audio quality are great. I wish the load time was faster.
GOOD DVD April 24, 2008 Pedro H. Herrero (usa) ITS GOOD, THE IMAGE QUALITY IS VERY GOOD, THE SOUND IS PERFECT, BUT NOW ALL NEW FILMS ARE IN BLUE RAY
Toshiba, you broke my heart but I still love you March 5, 2008 T. Andes (Kennewick, Wa USA) Slow to start up, but well worth the wait. And it plays my dvd-r's better than my previous dvd player. HD-DVD, I won't let you leave me! Get one of these and stock up on the discounted HD-dvd's, it will be cheaper than a blu-ray investment at this point in time.
