Good product, but should come with latest firmware January 8, 2009 A. Plomp (Washington DC) I would have given it 5 stars if the player would have come with the latest firmware. Updating via the network connection did not work, so I tried to update via the USB port which did not work either. Eventually I was able to get the firmware updated via CD. After that, updating via the network still did not work, nor did Netflix. Product support was nice, but could not help. 'must be a security setting'. They promised to call me back in a few days. One hour later, I found out that for some reason the DNS server in my network could not handle LG (it handles all other internet connections fine). After that I changed the DNS server, all worked fine and as expected. Great picture and sound quality as well as intuitive menus. Some more network debugging information in the network settings would be useful and would have saved me (and LG) a lot of time. Overall: nice product, would buy again.
Great combo January 8, 2009 Stuart Berman (Grand Rapids, MI United States) This LG unit is awesome. It is a terrific DVD and Blu-Ray player with all of the specs you could want including Profile 2.0 (BD-Live) at a reasonable price on Amazon. I am thrilled with the Netflix performance picture looks great, the controls a snap to use and I am saving a ton of money by renting DVDsand Blu-ray titles. The player has a USB slot for loading photos or songs as well as BD-Live content. You need to have at least a 1 GB USB stick. You should also plan on buying an HDMI cable since the unit only comes with component cables. My experience with LG has been so positive I plan to consider LG for future purchases along their entire product line.
Blu Ray Player January 8, 2009 Palmtrees (Chicago, Illinois, USA) The player was a Christmas gift for my husband. He had it hooked up in about 1 hour out of the box to the flat screen on the bedroom wall. He seems to think the blu ray discs have a much superior picture quality. I also gave him a subsciption to Netflix because of the ability of this player to download movies and play instantly. We have not completed that part of the installation yet. The many buttons on the remote have some functions that we have yet to find or figure out. (Reading the manuals would probably help.) This player was a little more expensive than some of the other blu ray players, but I wanted the feature of downloading movies instantly. (Tired of the premium movie channels with nothing to watch.) I almost bought a PS3 instead of this player which may be a better choice for those who like games.
Impressive technology - works great! January 7, 2009 R. Atkins I am very happy with the LG BD300. I am making full use of the BlueRay and streaming Netflix capabilities and the results have been very impressive. The unit has worked very well without any glitches. It was easy to setup. I just connected it to my home network and it automatically detected the network and went online. When I first attempted to use the Netflix streaming feature it said a mandatory update was necessary. It then asked and I approved the update. It downloaded it automatically and when it re-booted (yes - a DVD player that boots!) the Netflix feature was ready to use. I entered the Netflix code as instructed and presto - streaming Netflix videos were immediately available. The unit powers up and is ready to play a disk in about 10-15 seconds which is decently quick. Menu and chapter access when playing either DVD or BlueRay disks is fast - much faster than my prior Sony DVP-NS755P player. The user interface is very intuitive and easy to use. The image quality is amazing - especially when playing standard DVDs which the unit upscales and they look almost as good as a Blue Ray on a 60" Sony LCD Wega display. When the unit is left idle for a period of time it will go into screen saver mode to avoid burning an image on the display. The unit also supports BDLive online functions but I have not yet had a BlueRay disk that has a BDLive feature to try so I can't comment on that feature. The quality of Netflix streaming videos is very good over a 1.5Mbps internet connection. What I would call standard DVD quality on my previous DVD player and very watchable. The ability to fast forward/reverse is very good within a streaming video - very quick and practical. I am impressed with how well the software has been designed. Before playing a Netflix streaming video the unit performs a quality test. As long as it rates above the 60% mark the video quality is easily standard DVD quality. If the quality test result is below 60% the video quality becomes more muddy with occasional blockiness and color banding during fast moving scenes. Still quite watchable but not great. You will need a minimum 1.5Mbps download Internet bandwidth for a >60% quality ranking. The whole idea of streaming on-demand internet video is going to revolutionize the way we all watch our entertainment and the LG BD300 is a very good example of a well designed unit to do the job. This unit made the Christmas holiday much more enjoyable since we were able to select and watch a number of Netflix movies online to watch immediately after we had finished watching all of the Netflix disks that we had received and I didn't have to leave the house to rent a DVD from the local store. The unit will also notify you when a software update is available as it did one day after powering up. You are given the option to update at that momement or you can do it later. A typical upgrade seems to take about 5-7 minutes on a 1.5Mbps internet connection. OK - so what are the cons? Not much but significant I feel is the lack of a WiFi interface that will make it challenging to connect the unit to the Internet for anyone that doesn't have an ethernet cable running to their entertainment system. One very minor 'tech' complaint that will only mean something to those that use universal remotes (like the Logitech Harmony) to control their systems. The unit's IR codes do not offer specific Power On and Power Off commands, only a Power Toggle. When I load up a disk (which powers the unit on) before I switch my system to watch a DVD mode - the unit ends up being powered off since the Harmony remote can only issue a Power Toggle command instead of a Power On command like most other equipment offers. This is a minor annoyance but I wish equipment manufacturers would think about this type of stuff given that wide use of Universal remote controls. Overall this unit is an excellent buy and raises the bar for any competing device to try and achieve the same level of performance, quality and ease of use.
Performs as expected January 7, 2009 Jack W. McDaniel Jr. (Berkeley Lake, GA USA) We're happy with the LG BD300. It does every thing that was claimed in the marketing material. The "BD live" feature is lame, but it's not the fault of the player, it's just that there is very little compelling content, at least for the handful of bd-live enabled discs that we've purchased. I hope the studios will put some more effort into this in the future. The blu ray discs look incredible (as they should), and the up-sampled standard-def DVDs display nicely also, almost as good as our OPPO (and that is a real complement). We will probably move the OPPO (DVD player) to another room. The Netflix streaming feature works very well, and we get roughly standard-def-DVD quality on most shows that we watch. We have Comcast and usually see 8-10 mbit download speeds. Even hooked-up to our projector, with 100 inch screen, the quality is acceptable to good. I look forward to when Netflix starts to offer high-def streaming content. I was also hoping that the BD300 would be able to play high-def MPEG4, and AVI files that we have burned to CD/DVD. Our standard def OPPO DVD player was so good about this with standard def content, it even tried to play some high def video files - and did play the embedded audio tracks of those files, but it couldn't handle the high bit rate video. The BD300 won't even recognize the discs... It's not fair to criticize the unit for something that LG never claimed it could do, but I wanted to let others know. I'm still giving it four solid stars, it might even be worthy of five.
