Amazon.com Product Description Toshiba's 42H81 42" HDTV-Ready TheaterWide Projection Television is a state-of-the-art digital television for home theater aficionados and lovers of amazing picture and sound reproduction everywhere. Video Features In addition to being HDTV-ready, so the set can fully appreciate incoming digital signals, it also includes IDSC (Intelligent Digital Scan Conversion), which produces a high-end progressive scan picture with artificial intelligence that helps avoid artifacts and jagged lines caused by motion. IDSC also includes Advanced Video Noise Reduction, which virtually eliminates picture "snow." This set is built with Toshiba's Powerfocus Optic System, a high-quality, four-element lens system designed to maximize sharpness and brightness, as well as TouchFocus, for easy returns to sharp, accurate focus from corner to corner of the screen. Adding to your home theater experience, this set's Cinema Mode more accurately reproduces in DVDs the film's original 24-frame material (television signals reproduce images at a faster but often incompatible frame rate), eliminating the possibility of other errors or artifacts caused by simply doubling the signal, as with conventional televisions. Audio Features This MTS Stereo with SAP (second language decoding) TV also includes SBS, or Sub Bass System, which provides a noticeable boost to the unit's low frequency. Connections include: two rear A/V inputs, two rear s-video inputs, two rf inputs, front panel a/v/s inputs, center channel audio input, a/v outputs, and a variable audio output. Other Features Among other features, this set includes a backlit universal remote, dual tuner picture-in-picture, so you can watch one program while monitoring another, two-level mute, and Speed Surf.

Great.... for a while August 23, 2010 Kevin We bought this TV back in 2003 when we first bought our house which has a large living room. Out little 27" looked like a cell phone screen across the room. When shopping around for larger televisions, we noticed the crisp, vivid picture that the Toshiba had. I trusted the Toshiba name as well. After 5 or so years, we started getting red halos and distortion. The convergence board was shot. It costs about $300 or more to get this fixed.... more than what it is worth. I replaced it with a 52" Samsung LCD, again, bought on name and picture quality. All in all, aren't all new TV's disposable consumer garbage meant for a few years and then to be trashed? Sad, but reality. Until consumers start demanding more for their hard-earned cash, I guess companies will just keep wasting resources and consumers will keep forking over for TV's, computers, and other electronics every few years.
Good tv but fades February 9, 2009 Benjamin Hamilton (Colorado) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After a few months the picture would squiggle horizontally. It would take longer and longer for it to "warm up" and straighten out. I did some research and found this is a common problem with this type of TV. The board goes bad and can cost anywhere from $200-$500 to repair. The picture looks great, when it works.
Still going....... October 1, 2006 Steven Briggs (Pearland, Texas) I bought this TV from a Tweeter store as a display discount. This TV was used continuously for a year during store hours before I bought it. I only agreed to buy it because it came really cheap at the time and they included a 5 year in-home service contract and warranty. About 6 months later I was moving and it was in the bed of my truck facing back. My expert securing job turned out to be amateur and the wind slammed the TV face first down into the bed of my truck, completely knocking the screen panels in. Got home, McGivered it a bit and got the screens back in - turned it on and volia - we were watching Shrek crystal clear 5 minutes later. Only sustaining consequence - a broken corner piece that fit right back in.
4 years later with an 18 month old son who likes to bang on it, it is still putting out like new.
Toshiba still running strong! July 13, 2006 Stephen V. Strunk (Virginia) Long after the new plasma sets will be on the junk pile, this Toshiba is likely to still be working. With all of the new HD channels with surround sound, it has been a wonderful experience. The only maintenance has been to manually adjust the focus every 6 months. I have owned this set for almost 5 years.
Service Nightmare December 29, 2005 MrFye (Massachusetts) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am on my second replacement since I purchased this TV in 2002. The picture was outstanding at first and it was the perfect size. One day we noticed there were some "ghosts" on the edges of cartoons. They were red. Then we noticed that everything seemed to have too much red. Brown was reddish brown. It was just after the one year warranty expired ( everyone's worst nightmare ). We returned it to the retailer three times. Each time they were unable to solve it. Calls to Toshiba were futile. We never got to talk to a person. Internet was no help. We finally convinced the retailer to give us a replacement after threat of lawsuit. The replacement has been great except for the wide part of the screen being a different shade than the middle part. This happened because we watched broadcasts that were not widescreen giving us a square picture with shading on the sides. If you watched regular broadcasts any other way the picture was distorted. Well after time the shaded parts burnt their shade into the screen permanently. Now when we watch widescreen movies, which is the reason we bought it, the outer parts of the image are a different shade than the middle. I also find that if
I use any other DVD player but Toshiba the picture is blue (component video being used). I would love to sell this horror show, but who would buy a TV with these problems. It looks like I'll be eating the cost of this one.
