Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
SVA introduces Evolution (EV), its first line of LCD monitors with a built in TV tuner. The 17" EV-1703 is a full function 1280 x 1024 SXGA resolution monitor with a 400: 1 contrast ratio and superb 20 ms response time that renders crisp and vibrant video motion and game graphics. Use the monitor's convenient composite and S-video inputs to connect a DVD player or game console.

Amazon.com Product Description
Flip between TV news and document work at your computer or surf the Web after viewing a TV show--SVA's EV-1703 lets you do both from one stylish TV/monitor. The 17-inch active-matrix, TFT (thin-film-resistor) LCD screen offers razor-sharp images, an internal NTSC tuner for broadcast TV viewing, and a 1,280 x 1,024 native pixel resolution. It's PC and Mac compatible, too. Image quality benefits from a high (400:1) contrast ratio, fast response time (typically 20 ms), and wide (150 x 140 degrees, horizontal/vertical) viewing angles. With 250 cd/m2 brightness, it's not the most luminous TV available, but if your viewing area is not excessively bright, the set's high-contrast images will still look great.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (no risk of image burn-in), space savings, light weight/easy positioning, and energy efficiency (most LCDs use substantially less power than their CRT equivalents). They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts, which usually "spec" higher (higher brightness, higher contrast ratio).

Choose from two onscreen languages (English and Chinese) and OSD access to settings for positioning, phase, auto adjustment, clock, image center, color, temperature, gamma, backlight control, and popular preset timings. The EV-1703 offers RGB (15-pin D-Sub), composite-video, and S-video inputs, which accommodate a range of computers and home-entertainment equipment. Its stereo speakers pump 3 watts per channel for clear, reasonably full-bodied sound.

What's in the Box
TV, AC adapter, AC power cord, audio and video cables (stereo analog audio and composite- and S-video), and a user's manual.

1 out of 5 stars Color problem   March 10, 2006
Burbank Steve (Burbank, CA)
I have this LCD/TV for slightly over 1 year (1 yr 4 mth) and has been using it as a TV. And right around the time waranty is about to expire, we start seeing what is supposed to be black color is replaced by green. Other colors are displaying properly. This problem would come and go: sometimes going to "Fine Tune" set it all the way down and bring it back up would fix the problem for 10 minutes before it comes back again.

Since it doesn't happen consistently, I made the mistake of not sending it back to the vendor. Now the warranty expired, and I am stuck with a "green" TV.

Watch out for color problem on this TV.

3 out of 5 stars Great Monitor, Terrible TV tuner...   December 9, 2005

This LCD works great for every day computer functions as a monitor, but not as a TV. The problem is when you want to watch TV, you better be ready to handle the fuzzy picture. I've have it mounted on the wall in my computer room as a TV, but used a VCR to tune the cable channels, because it's TV tuner is terrible. The picture from the VCR's RCA plugs is ten times better than cable TV feed into the coax, but it is still fuzzy. I guess since it has such a high res native mode, the regular TV's low resolution can't be produced cleanly. For the price, you can't complain too much. I have been using it for 2 years, so I can't say I didn't get my money's worth.

It does have it's benefits, since I needed a second monitor to fix computers at home, it saves plenty of space hanging on the wall by two screws. No need to spend $50 on a VESA wall mount, when two drywall screws will do.

After two years, I've decided this Xmas I'm giving it to my mother as an upgrade to her 15" monitor on her computer at home, and I'm not even telling her it is a TV.

3 out of 5 stars right for the price   September 9, 2005

for the price, this lcd is not bad at all. as others have said, the picture tends to be a bit dark. but as i found for myself, you have to set the angle of the screen to allow for best viewing. then the picture is just fine. the remote is a bit small. and the volume controlles are not that easy to deal with. but i keep the mute set to "ON", and use the audio from my surround system anyway. all and all, i can't complaine. it's well worth the price paid.

2 out of 5 stars No good as a TV.   March 13, 2005

Note: contradicting Amazon's title, this is NOT a TV. It is a monitor with a built-in TV tuner (lots of differences). Thus the low price.

I bought this item from J&R Music via Amazon.com. I returned it becuase the volume went from off to fairly loud with no "in-between" as I adjusted the volume up from zero. Note that I bought this to use as a TV, not a monitor.

Well, They sent me another and it had the exact same issue. Also, not being a TV, this has no Closed-caption feature or other "taken for granted" TV features you would get in an actual television. SVA and J&R Music both emphasized this, though I see Amazon still has not changed it (I notified Amazon.com in January, 2005).

5 out of 5 stars Flat Panel TV   February 17, 2005

I purchased this TV for my basement wall, to watch the Nascar races and so far so good, excellent TV. It is light and easy to handle, we popped out the bottom stoppers on the stand, removed the stand and with two screws in the wall it went up as easy as hanging a picture. The brightness did need adjusting but the picture comes in fine, maybe the picture depends on if you have cable or a dish. We have a dish and I have no problem at all, the remote is a little small and my husband kept hitting the wrong button to begin with but once you get used to it we both agreed- excellent choice *****
