Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
There's a lot to like about the DocuMate 252 - the faster, better, easier-to-use workgroup scanner solution. Twice as fast as the leading brand workgroup scanner in duplex mode, The DocuMate 252 is the price and performance leader in its category. It also includes a powerful suite of applications that improve image quality, OCR accuracy and document management. And, its revolutionary one touch scanning and small compact size makes it easy to use on any desktop or in any department.

3 out of 5 stars Very Weak Twain Driver on Vista   June 5, 2008

We use Adobe Acrobat Pro version 8 to scan documents and at the same time we have it perform automatic OCR all at once. Once scanned and OCR'd with Acrobat, if we need the actual text any time in the future we can 'save as' that document as a Word file. It's a system that works well for our office. So, when we needed another scanner to work with our new Vista machine, I read the reviews and the Xerox 252 came out on top. br / br /Like others have said, this is a very nice scanner. The hardware seems really well made - it's sturdy and sounds like a solid piece of equipment in operation. The feeder works really well and in the four straight hours I tried to get this scanner to work directly with Adobe Acrobat in Windows Vista, it did not jam or double feed one single time. But there's the rub: on Windows Vista, the current twain driver (direct from Xerox's website) doesn't work at all with Adobe Acrobat 8. When you go to scan from within Acrobat, Acrobat completely crashes. (Photoshop can't find this scanner at all using the twain driver.) After Googling for answers and trying many, many things, it just doesn't appear that Xerox (or should I say Visioneer) has completed work on their Vista drivers for this scanner yet. This scanner does work just fine under Vista using the included Paperport software (which has some really great features - when you eventually find them in the non-standard taskbar interface), but this scanner should also work directly with other twain compliant applications like Acrobat Pro 8, but it doesn't at the moment. As a result of this, if you need a scanner for Vista that works directly with Acrobat, the Fujitsu 5120 we have works great directly with Acrobat under Vista (although I like the Xerox hardware better).

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Scanner - Done wonders for my office   April 23, 2008

I have now owned the DocuMate 252 for over one year and it is amazing! Our real estate company scans virtually every contract, legal document, tax bill, tax return, etc. with virtually no problem. The scanning itself is amazingly fast (but the lamp first must stabilize when you've just started a job when the machine was dormant - which involves a short delay of about 20 seconds). We routinely scan 40 to 50 page contracts without problem. br / br /The OCR is fantastic, there are multiple pre-set scan options including searchable .pdf file format. We scanned thousands of pages of searchable .pdf for some litigation we were involved in saving us a ton of legal fees. We send out our property due diligence information electronically now. Paper jams have not been an issue at all. I spent a lot of time looking at different brands but I am incredibly happy with this Xerox and am very glad we got a upper end scanner rather than settling for a low end version. Note that it will not do oversized paper (such as our huge property survey's or plans) - we use it only for letter and legal sized papers. We had a very old and slow flat bed scanner - this is an enormous improvement. br / br /This may be the best technology buy I have ever made. We do not have an IT department but both the setup and operation are painless. I'm thinking of buying another one for the house. This is without a doubt the most valuable equipment in the office other than our pc's. I will never work in an office without one again.

3 out of 5 stars Works great when it works   January 3, 2008

I agree with the other positive reviews: it works great, is fast, rarely jams, etc. And I guess I got used to these qualities, so I was really disappointed when it stopped working. Two or three times it stopped working and tech support got it working quickly, however, the most recently failure was more serious: tech support was not able to get it working and because it is just over one year old, the warranty is expired. So they want $150.00 to send me a refurbished unit, which is an OK price, but the problem is you have to send in the current unit and it takes them two weeks or so to send you the refurbished one. I can't go two weeks without a scanner. And I'm hesitant to accept a refurbished machine that has already been sent back. It didn't last long enough to justify the price ($900.00) so I'm going to try the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M which sells for half the price and has equally as good reviews.

4 out of 5 stars How to foul (rather) fool the scanner   October 10, 2007

The scanner works spectacularly; if you know how to foul/fool the end paper sensor. After spending 2 hours looking at all of the moving parts (there's only 5 or so of them) If you crazy glue a staple to prevent the bottommost switch so that it can't return all the way to the top of the support, thus triggering "paper jam," you can fool the device in to thinking that there cannot be a paper jam, even if there is one :-) br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Made me paperless!   July 21, 2007

What a great product. I searched, researched and found the answer I was looking for - a compact product that I could put lots of paper into and quickly scan into various formats and then file or send back out as email, fax or post to internet (FTP). I also didn't have to have a Phd in computer science to do it. It is plug and play and very intuitive. I have gone from 16 file cabinets to none and drawers full of deal folders to everything on my computer. Life is good!
