Amazon.com Product Description Capture the far-off action of fast-paced sports or zoom in for an intimate portrait with the Canon EF 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens. The L-series lens offers an Image Stabilizer that provides up to four stops of shake correction--a first for Canon IS lenses. The use of fluorite UD lens elements, meanwhile, produces an excellent optical performance in terms of resolution and contrast. Add in a sturdy housing with water- and dust-proof construction and you have a lens that's both portable and high performing. Other details include an f/4 maximum aperture, a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that enables quick and quiet autofocusing, compatibility with circular polarizing filters, and a lightweight body. The lens carries a one-year warranty. p/p ul liFocal length: 70-200mm /li liMaximum aperture: f/4 /li liLens construction: 20 elements in 15 groups /li liDiagonal angle of view: 34 to 12 degrees (with full-frame cameras) /li liFocus adjustment: AF with full-time manual focus /li liClosest focusing distance: 3.94 feet /li liZoom system: 7-group helical zoom (72-degree rotational angle) /li liFilter size: 67mm /li liDimensions: 3 inches in diameter, 6.8 inches long /li liWeight: 26.8 ounces /li /ul table align="center" cellpadding="3" width="550" tbody tr tdimg alt="Canon EF 70-200mm f4L USM lens" border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/photo/detailspages/canon_70-200mm_f4L_usm_550.jpg" //td /tr tr tdcenterstrongemsmall/small/emsmall/small/strong/center/td /tr /tbody /table
Product Description Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens offers the highest possible optical quality with no change in aperture over the full focal range of the lens. This allows photographers to set exposure at the widest aperture and zoom all the way through to 200mm without having to decrease shutter speed. Developed for use with a Canon SLR camera, this autofocus telephoto zoom lens offers optimized use with the Canon EOS series digital cameras. Of particular note, Canon has introduced an image stabilizer (IS) that adjusts to meet the demands of professional photography. BR IS reduces dramatically the image blur caused by camera shake. Gyro sensors detect unwanted vibrations, triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path, returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane. For shooting immobile subjects, Mode 1 corrects for movement in the image along both the horizontal and vertical axes. For shooting while panning horizontally to follow a moving subject, Mode 2 turns off vertical correction and prevents the effect of dragging the subject back through the frame. BR The lens' Ring-type USM employs ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive auto focus with unrivalled speed and near-silent operation. A powerful CPU and improved AF algorithm contribute to speed performance. The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM includes distance metering information, providing compatibility with the E-TTL II flash system of late model cameras such as the EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS 5D and EOS 400D. When used in conjunction with Canon's range of EX Speedlite flash units, the lens passes distance information to the flash algorithm for markedly improved flash exposure metering. Includes Lens hood and soft pouch

My favorite lens December 4, 2008 J. Roberts (San Anselmo, CA) I highly recommend this lens. It surprised me when it arrived that it's so small and light (I'm comparing to the EF 24-70 f2.8 L and the EF 300 f4 L). It internally focuses so there is no change in length throughout the zoom range. It's extremely sharp wide open - I've used it both for close-ups with an extension tube and for more distant shots. Got my first decent close-up of a hummingbird. The IS works so well it's hard to distinguish from shots on the tripod - it really does give you an extra stop or two hand-holding the camera. This is pretty much state of the art in lens design. If you're looking for a lens in this range, go for it! You won't be disappointed.
Canon 70-200mm f4 L IS USM Lens December 3, 2008 M. Struempler (NE) The Canon 70-200mm f4 L IS USM is a great lens. It's pricey but it provides great quality images. The lens is part of Canon's L line up which is a better built product. br / br /The lens is light-weight and provides a nice zoom lentgh to get you much closer to the subject you are shooting. The IS works very well. With the greatest aperture value of f4 it isn't the best in low light, but that is not one of my concerns, it shoots great outdoors or indoors with enough light. The IS helps out some here also. It's the biggest lens I have owned but it still fits nice in a camera bag and isn't too heavy to carry around with other lenses. br / br /The only thing I wish this lens came with was a tripod mount. I mounted the camera and lens on a tripod connected to the camera however and it held up fine. It is light enough it will not bow the whole set up down, but I wouldn't suggest long use like this. I highly recommend this lens for any Canon DSLR.
Great Lens November 30, 2008 David Townsend (Rochester NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I spent a lot of time doing research trying to decide which zoom lens to get and decided to spend the extra money for this one and the results have been well worth it, very fast, accurate auto-focus, IS works very well, Image quality is superb. This has been regarded as one of Canon's best lenses. I'm using it with my 30D
Super SHARP AMAZING Image Quality November 28, 2008 L. Fishler (The Hudson Valley, NY) I am a pet photographer and absolutely adore this lens. It is significantly smaller and lighter than the 70-200 f2.8 IS, which is very important to me, and many argue that the image quality is far superior. I opted to forego the extra stops for the portability, and since I use this lens for shooting in natural light, highly doubt I will miss them. I owned the 70-200 f4 NON IS before this lens, but think this version is far superior in both image quality, and functionality. I use both a 20D and 40D, with 10-22, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 100 2.8 Macro, 24-105 f4 IS, and this 70-200 f4 IS, and feel it is probably THE sharpest lens I own. I highly recommend it!
Nice carry-around zoom telephoto, good for shaky hands November 28, 2008 Comdet I upgraded to this lens from the non-IS version of the 70-200mm as I was having problems getting sharp shots not affected by hand shake. The lens is rather long and heavy and the image stabilization comes in quite handy, especially with shots under low light conditions when you don't want to raise the ISO too high to compensate. The IS can generally get you 2 stops more light than what you might ordinarily expect before experiencing hand shake blur. br / br /Images from this lens are very nice - sharp and good color, good bokeh at the wider apertures so you get nice separation between subject and background. I took this lens to the zoo once and got lots of good shots with it, I've been very pleased with its performance. br / br /I use this lens on a full-frame camera, so keep in mind that if you are buying this for a camera with a cropped sensor, the actual focal range is more like a 110-320mm.
