Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The DVP-NS57P/B DVD player features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, providing sharper images for a better viewing experience. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Sony's Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include fast/slow playback with sound, and custom parental control.

3 out of 5 stars Good DVD player - worst user manual I have ever seen   December 3, 2008
Douglas Boyd (Long Beach, CA USA)
I would give this unit 5 stars if the instruction manual (owner's manual) wasn't so AWFUL. It is the worst, most amateurish manual I have ever seen. If I were Sony, I would be embarrassed. A 10 year old child could do better. One example - the pictures/drawings in the manual that show what you should see onscreen when going through setup bear no resemblance to what you actually see. br / br /Since the manual was OF NO HELP, it took a lot of trial and error to learn how to control this unit. Now that I know how, the unit runs quite well. It is just a bit slow to respond to commands when it is first turned on...but responds crisply to commands when playing a dvd (such as forward or back, play slow motion, play fast motion, zoom in and out, pause, etc.). br / br /As mentioned by others, this player only plays region 1 dvd's but it does a very nice job with discs of varying quality. br / br /General Information - I am using this unit with a 1999 Toshiba 27 inch TV, model CZ27V51 with ColorStream (same as component video) capability and a 4:3 ratio screen. br / br /Notice to Sony == pay me 1/2 of what you paid your team of writers and I will write a manual customers will love (because it will be accurate, clear and easy to read) and that Sony will be proud of (because it will be professional). br /

5 out of 5 stars DVD Player is great!   November 30, 2008

This unit does everything it states and was excellent right out of the box. Easy to use remote makes it all the better. I highly recommed.

5 out of 5 stars A very reliable item at a great price!   November 23, 2008
D. Michael Elkins (Valrico, FL USA)
A large proportion of my viewing these days involves discs of my own creation. Unfortunately my older generation Sony DVD player was either unable to read those discs at all or the discs would freeze at some point and then refuse to be played further. br / br /Considering that my older player had cost much more than this newer one I was fearful that I might be wasting my money; nevertheless, I did like the fact that it had the ability to play mp3s and jpeg files, which my older unit did not, so I decided to take a chance. br / br /Setting up the unit was a breeze. After two months of use, I can honestly say that I have never had a single disc rejected as being unplayable or even had one freeze during play. Unlike what I have read from some other reviewers I don't think that the unit takes too long to perform an initial read of a disc. I simply insert a disc and usually by the time that I have walked back to the couch and gotten comfortable, it is ready to play. br / br /All in all, I would say that I am very pleased with this unit and the price for a "name" brand is hard to beat!

This unit works fine and is a snap to set up. It has the ability to start in the middle of a program. I would recommend it highly

3 out of 5 stars GOOD UNIT, POORLY DESIGNED/MADE REMOTE   September 8, 2008
Michael J. Beal (Richmond, VA .USA)

Yes the ability of this unit to read/play imperfect discs is better than most, but the design, programing and functioning of the remote is poor at best. To start, the buttons on the unit are too small and are in the wrong/less than convenient positioning. The keys function slowly/poorly. The actual programming is reqiures too many steps to effect desired actions such as slow play requires hitting of pause then then slow rather than just pressing slow key to effect desired reduced speed. The .6 slow play is unique and liked. br /
