5 out of 5 stars Works just as described - I'm quite happy with them!   November 15, 2008

I read a lot of reviews for the dozen or so noise-canceling earbuds available on the market. One thing I knew I didn't want was the large over-ear headphones. I'm a traveling professional who leaves town every other week. Size and weight are important in my pack as I carry a couple books, a couple files, a folio, a laptop, power cords, a slim camera, a microphone, a recorder, an extra laptop battery (for long flights), an external floppy disk drive, business cards, office supplies... you get the point. A lot of stuff! br / br /So one more thing could break the seams on the backpack. Enter the Audio-Technica Noise-Canceling Earbuds. They're a perfect size and really do cancel 80-85% of the noise around me while on the flight. When you hit the slider to turn on the noise canceling, it's night and day. While you can't expect dead silence in such a compact form (maybe in the future?), you hear some of the hissing from the noise canceling, you hear some of the constant engine noise, you hear some of the conversations around you... but it's significantly less. Once you get used to the static hiss (white noise), your new world is quite pleasant, really. br / br /I recommend them for any traveling professional. I think they're the best iteration of current technology. I can't wait to see if someone can one-up these in the future. And did I mention Amazon's price is fantastic? The least expensive shipping brought them from the North East to the California coast in a little over a week. Just so you know...

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding and comfy   November 3, 2008

I was never really happy with my JVC noise canceling cans. The noise canceling was reasonable (for forty bucks especially) but there was always a distinct hum when they were on and they only cut out a narrow band of low jet rumble. The comfort for plane use was marginal as it is for all cans. After a while they all leave me feeling clammy around the ears. Also hard to find a comfortable position for sleeping. On a whim i bought these ear buds. br / br /Outstanding! br / br /Flew to Miami last week popped these in and was really impressed. They cut out a HUGE swath of jet noise without any hum or buzz and the in-ear design is so much more comfy. I can lean my head into a pillow no-problem. I didn't even plug in my iPod for 20 minutes the silence was so nice. Once i did plug it in the audio quality was completely acceptable. Nice crisp highs and enough bass for my ears. (Note that I do not play any music that might really need crazy-good bass performance. For rock, classical and spoken word they are just fine.) br / br / Left them in for the entire 2 and a half hour flight with no "headphone fatigue." br / br /One tiny problem is since the design seals your outer ear, when the plane is climbing or descending you will get a lot of pressure problems requiring a lot of yawning to "pop" your ears. Once at altitude that goes away. br / br /Included carry case and accessories are great. you get an extension cord, an airplane seat jack adaptor and a variety of rubber seal sizes to fit your ear perfectly. The stock mediums fit me but nice they included other sizes. Also nice was a good Eveready alkaline AA battery was included.

4 out of 5 stars best of both worlds?   November 3, 2008

I've tried many noise cancellation earphones in the past for my long flights. From the expensive Bose QuietComfort to the cheaper alternative Sennheiser PXC250. I've given up on both because of their bulk, not only are they a hassle to carry around, but also makes it hard for me to rest my head on my pillow on the plane. Then I tried the IEM (in-ear-monitor) earphones and have stuck with those until I saw these on sale. I figured I should be able to get the best of both: active noise cancellation at IEM size and comfort. Well, it turns out you can get the best of both, but the gains outweighs the sacrifices. In other words, the active noise cancellation is not as good as the Bose, and the audio quality is not as good as "vanilla" IEMs such as Shure E2Cs. But I find myself opting to carry the ATH-ANC3 more often than the other options when I go on a long flight. Until a better option comes along, I'll be using these as my dedicated in-flight earphones. br / br /Suggestions for improvement: br /1. less audible hiss generated from active noise cancellation, all other active noise cancelling earphones have the same problem too, but to a much lesser degree. br /2. volume control on-wire would be nice br /3. implement volume limiter to prevent sudden loud outputs. (in flight announcements coming through earphones are often times way above hearing range), or another way to solve it is to increase earphone drive impedance to 32ohm and above. I may have gotten hearing damage already from the sudden outburst of "turbulence warning" announcements while watching a in-flight movie.

5 out of 5 stars GOODBYE SONY MDR-NC22   October 30, 2008

The SONY name has been a symbol for reliability, innovation and quality. Not any more. I purchased the MDR-NC22 for their obvious feature, active-noise cancelling. Upon receiving the product I fist took visual note that these pricey pairs didn't even include a hard case ( that's one up for Audio Technica). I've purchased $20 pairs from SONY and they came with a hard case design to roll up the headphone cable. br / br /The MDR-NC22 did not have symmetrical headphone cable design. In layman's terms the cables were not the same lenght (that's one up for Audio Technica). I don't know who's bright idea it was to has one cable lenght shorter than the other. I can see this application useful for cell phone use when a microphone piece is needed, but for REGULAR audio cables??? I think the SONY team had a bad case of crack that day. br / br /The Audio Technica's have all the same features and accessories as the SONY's. However, Audio Technica's have an extension cable audio cable ( one up for Audio Technica). br / br /The cable girth (thickness) is better in the Audio Technica's compared to the SONY's. Unless you want an annoying flimsy audio cable twisting up against your cheekbone or chin, the Audio Technica's are a better quality. Even iTunes has a better STOCK audio cable SONY!! (one up for Audio Technica). br / br /Now if you think I'm making a big deal out of the hard carrying case here's some food for thought: On the second week after having purchased the SONY's I stuffed the glob of cable inside their included fabric pouch(what a joke). When I took out the glob the earpiece got stuck as I pulled out the mess and presto!! the cable came apart from the earpiece. br /Needless to say I was livid. Thank you SONY for putting out such a piece of crap on the market. Goodbye SONY, helllooooo Audio Technica. br / br /p.s. The Audio Technica's sound better than the SONY's. Better bass and midrange response.

Got 'em for my iPhone. Returned them (less 20% stocking fee) because of the interference noise. Interestingly, they sucked at noise cancellation too. Run, don't walk in another direction. br / br /The vendor told me that they don't normally do refunds (even with the restocking fee). This is an additional AMAZON DEFICIENCY because it is really hard to find the return policy for associate vendors. AMAZON, make the policy easier for consumers to see!!
