The DMP-BD70V also includes an SD Memory card slot and USB slot, so you can view and share both digital still images and HD video recorded with an HD camcorder in the AVCHD format. 4:4:4 Technology In order to produce the ultimate picture quality, Panasonic's Blu-ray players employ high precision 4:4:4 signal technology, which working in tandem with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus processes each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the horizontal direction, to compliment vertical direction processing. P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD) is another technology that contributes to the superior picture quality of the Blu-ray players. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel. Panasonic's Blu-ray players further utilize 16-level motion detection to categorize the image motion of each pixel into one of 16 levels; diagonal processing to detect diagonals and correct the pixels accordingly; 1080p up-conversion to up-convert content recorded in the 480i/p or 720p format to 1080p. The Blu-ray players also provide 1080/24p output, thereby reproducing cinema images from a Blu-ray Disc and DVD in their original 24p form with no need for conversion. This allows the user to enjoy cinema images in the same format used in cinema with a 1080/24p compatible TV. Lower Power Consumption Panasonic's 2009 Blu-ray players use Auto Power Stand-By, a function that automatically turns off the player when you return to TV operation using the VIERA Link menu. In addition, the Stand-by Power Save automatically turns off the player's Quick Start function. When VIERA is turned on, Quick Start also turns on. In addition, the development of the UniPhier single chip LSI makes it possible to pack an entire video signal processing circuit onto a single chip. This helps lower power consumption, reduces the number of parts needed and allows for a more compact design. Happy I bought it March 17, 2010 M. E. Peterson (FRESNO, CA, US) I spent quite a bit of time on line looking for a combination bluray/vhs player and this one fit the bill. Not only does it allow me to watch bluray or dvd discs, I can also watch vhs movies, and things I record from my tv. The price was very good, almost half on Amazon.com compared to buying from the panasonic web site. My multimedia player arrived on the day I was told it would come. I had it out of the package and connected to my big screen tv in about 10 minutes time. I have only used the machine for basic watching, but it has done well for vhs, dvd, and bluray. I believe I got a real bargain when I bought this mutimedia player.
Panasonic March 17, 2010 Jn Barlow I have played dvd's in this unit and the unit seems to work fine. I really like the ease of its operation system and it took my hubby only a few minutes to set up!
Simplifies your entertainment! March 15, 2010 Sparky Girl (Stafford, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I previously had an old DVD player and VHS player connected to my new Sony Bravia TV. The DVD's I had were watchable on the new tv, but nowhere near HD quality. Well, they are now! This is so nice to just have one cable (be sure to buy an HDMI cable or the upconversion of DVD's will not work), one remote, and one player on my shelf.
My old VHS tapes play ok, but I did not notice any drastic improvement in their quality. They will NOT look like HD tv. The quality is only as good as the tape, and not much can be done to improve that. However, it plays them at least as well as my old player.
The real advantage here is the upconversion of regular DVD's. Great improvement in quality there. However, at the default settings, the DVD images didn't look so great. Just be sure to go through all the settings on the "setup" menu, AND on the "display" menu. This is where you can tweak the image quality greatly, and you will probably have to. HINT: I had to turn the "sharpness" to the lowest level. Then it was perfect. Otherwise, on my Sony, the default setting was actually "oversharpened" with lots of "twinkles" around the edges of things. Just have some patience...it's really easy to adjust once you discover all the different settings.
Another great feature is the fact that you can pop your photo SD memory cards into the front slot, and immediately view your latest digital photos in stunning size and quality! They look great on my TV, and this feature is so easy to use.
For the price, this product cannot be beat!
Overall, a winner March 14, 2010 Mark R (Havertown, PA USA) This is a nicely built player with the Panasonic quality we have all come to expect. Very nice picture and easy enough to setup.
