4 out of 5 stars Firmware upgrade a trial   March 14, 2010
J. K. Lowden (New York, NY)

You can't upgrade the firmware unless you have a Windows computer. If this kind of thing matters to you (or if you're Sony) read on.

Once cabled up, we tried to watch a Neflix movie. The screen said Netflix wouldn't work because the software was out of date. Further checking showed the machine, bought 12 March 2010, was at version 015.

We needed a firmware update. Directions to correct that were neither on the screen nor in the manual, but a separate sheet of pink paper. It directed us to [...]. On selecting our model, we had to choose an operating system.

In true Henry Ford style, we could have any color we wanted, as long as it was Windows.

We have one XP box in a house full of Macs. We downloaded UPDATE_BDPN460_VER123.EXE and ran it. It did not update the firmware. It produced one file, UPDATE_BDPN460_VER123.iso.

At this point we had an ISO on the XP box. Instructions on the website say to use your DVD burning software to create a DVD from the ISO image. The XP machine has no burning software. Unlike Apple, Microsoft doesn't include any.

In my particular case, it so happens my Mac's DVD burner is broken ... from watching too many movies! On a hunch, I copied the ISO to my NetBSD machine and burned a CD -- a CD! -- using cdrecord. To Sony's credit, the player accepted the CD and updated the firmware without incident.

Having upgraded, we registered. That involved registering the device with Sony and -- separately, using another code -- with Netflix. Registration was done with a computer on the Web. It wasn't painless, but worked without error. Once registered, no further action was required to make the player work.

The whole process was needlessly complex. Windows wasn't really needed at all; I had to run Windows just to *extract* the ISO image file. (In fact, my XP machine couldn't download the file with either IE or the FTP command line client because my firewall blocks active FTP. I had to use a Mac to download the EXE, then run it on the PC to extract the ISO.)

Other reviews here say the firmware update was a snap. I certainly wouldn't describe it that way. Maybe an upgrade starting with more recent firmware versions is simpler.

Logically there's no need for Windows or FTP or Zip or burning software or writeable media. The player that can stream media from the Internet should be able to download the updated firmware to stable internal (or USB) storage and update itself. Short of that, Sony should make the zipped ISO image available by HTTP, and provide free Windows media-burning software on the same page.

works good..i like it, and it does what they claim. What i had to find out the hard way is it has no browser. it has a net flix " channel" ( and more) but you cannot type in a web address and "go" anywhere . I also had to register it with sony before it would allow me to register with netflix ....i dont know why.

5 out of 5 stars Very Happy With This Player So Far   March 11, 2010

I've had this player for just about a month and have nothing but good things to say about it. Loading of DVD's seems fast enough for me, and the video quality of Blu-rays and the upscaling of regular DVDs is very good ... and the various control features via the remote control work fine (particularly being able to start up where you left off if you have to stop / and even shut things down in the middle of a movie). I have also had perfect performance of Netflix streaming thus far. I am also very happy that this is one of the few players that supports both Netflix and Amazon On Demand streaming. I have no issues with the fact that the unit does not have wireless internet access (I actually prefer hard wiring for something where streaming is involved because I believe it is generally more consistent / dependable than wireless in my experience). Also, the player does a fine job playing both factory and burned music CD's.

I have read other reviews where people are not happy that you cannot open the disk tray with the remote control ... frankly I don't see that as being much of an issue. If you are needing to open the tray, then you are probably about to insert or remove a disk from it ... so you have to be standing right next to the player anyway in order to do that ... so what's the big deal? Plus, as in my case, if you have an entertainment center with glass doors, the last thing I would want to have happen is to accidentally hit an eject button on the remote and have the drawer open and potentially break the glass in the door ... so I am perfectly happy with only being able to open the tray from the front of the unit. All and all, this unit meets all of my needs very well.

5 out of 5 stars A great reasonably priced addition for your TV   March 10, 2010

I bought this item for my wife for Christmas and we're very pleased with it. Maybe once a week I have a minor glitch with Netflix that easily corrected by restarting the video. I have a wired lan with another computer and a printer that I set up myself with an older router that still does 1000 megs/sec, and I have Time Warner Cable with roadrunner
turbo boost that downloads 6 megs/sec. The picture in HD and even DVD is great. You tube runs perfectly, and I like the fact that there's USB port in the back that I can load a flash drive with videos or pics and see them on a BIG screen.
Blu Ray Discs look breathtaking and the upgraded DVD picture is very good as well.
It's changed my viewing habits that's for certain, and I thought for all this the price was very good.

4 out of 5 stars Good Blu-ray player, but...   March 10, 2010

It's simply lousy when one tries to use their internet features. Whether it be Netflix, Youtube, Slacker, whatever, it's really really slow in connecting, if it even does. I don't consider waiting 5-10 minutes for a connection to these services to be acceptable. Many times the connection attempt just times out/fails.

I have no issues with blue-ray playback quality, some DVDs look good upscaled (Universe by the History Channel for example), whereas others look so-so at best. I don't know what the deal is with that.

A minor quirk occurs when I try to use my Samsung TV's feature of streaming video from computers on my home network - if I connect directly to the network, I can access said computers and play video. If I am connected to the Sony player (so I can use it's online features), I cannot access the computers to stream video from them. I have to disconnect the network cable from the Sony unit and connect it to the Tv, turn TV off and on again...not a huge issue that the Sony unit doesn't act like a router, but it is a minor inconvienence.
