not the cheapest TV, but still a great value for top quality December 3, 2008 Ronald M. Cronovich (Henderson, NV) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like most others, I love this TV - picture is the best I've seen on any TV, and I did a lot of comparison shopping before deciding to order this one from Amazon. Like a few others here, I read the reviews from Consumer Reports and CNET.com and others, all of which gave this TV a top rating. br / br /I can't comment on the built-in speakers, since I run the sound through a home theater system. br / br /Regarding the glare issue: I've noticed a bit of glare, only when there's a light source immediately behind me (so that the face of the TV acts as sort of a mirror) and only when the video being displayed is dark. People have different tolerance levels for this type of thing, but I really don't think it's a big deal - it's no worse than any other TV I've owned or seen in a retail store. The TV is on a swivel stand. When this happens, I swivel the TV an inch or two to the right or left, which solves the problem. br / br /By the way, the viewing angle of this LCD TV is great - much wider than most other LCD TVs I've seen. br / br /The "touch of red" is subtle. Personally, I like it a lot - it's enough to give the TV a bit of a unique look, which I really appreciate because so many flat-screen TVs have the same bland styling. Yet, it is very subtle and can blend in with any decor, regardless of the color of your walls, furniture, etc. I don't think any but the very pickiest of people would feel the appearance of the TV clashes with their decor. br / br /If you purchase this set, I recommend buying from Amazon. First, their price is lower than almost any other retailer. (And, as another reviewer said, every couple days they raise or lower the price - it seems to fluctuate between $2060 and $1930 or thereabouts - so wait for it to go to the lower level and then order.) br / br /Second, Amazon pays for delivery and doesn't charge sales tax. Delivery would otherwise be $60 or more, and tax on a $2000 TV would be $100 or more in most states. br / br /The quality of the delivery service should factor into your decision. Different reviewers here have had different experiences, some great, others not so great. br / br /For what it's worth, here's mine: br / br /Amazon used the freight company "Pilot" to deliver my TV. The local Pilot depot (about 40 miles from here) received the TV just 5 days after I ordered it, but they only make deliveries to my town on certain days of the week, and only between 10am and 2pm. So, it took another week before I was able to coordinate with them for delivery to my house. br / br /They told me that 2 men would deliver the TV, but only one showed up at my house. So I was the second man. I didn't mind this - I'm in okay shape and happy for the exercise - but some folks might not be willing or able to help carry in their bigscreen TV from the truck. Also, the truck showed up when they said it would - which I really appreciated - so I didn't have to wait around all day for the delivery. br / br /The box the TV was packed in had some dirt on it (this is very typical, even with UPS and FedEx, I don't know how the insides of these delivery trucks get so dirty, do they also ship shrubs and small trees?) When the box was set down on the carpet in several different places, it left dirt that was very hard to get out. Frustrating. br / br /The box was undamaged, and the TV was very carefully packed inside it and had absolutely no damage. The guy took it out of the box, inspected the TV, and I helped him put it on the stand. He put the batteries in the remote and plugged it in. He offered to take away the box and packing materials, but I opted to hang on to them. Except for the dirt on my carpet, I considered this to be excellent service. br / br /Before putting the new TV on my stand, I had to move my old TV off the stand and out of the way. I couldn't do this by myself - it's a 34" widescreen tube TV and weighs nearly 200 pounds. I asked the guy if he could help me move it, and he didn't hesitate to help. I gave him a generous gratuity afterward. br / br /A few people here have reported problems or defects with the TV. While every instance of this is regrettable, I would not let this deter you from ordering this TV. Samsung sells a huge number of TVs, yet has a very high reliability rating from Consumer Reports. So, while it's possible the one you get will need some type of warranty repair, it's not very likely. There's always this risk when you purchase any flat-screen TV from any manufacturer (just like one out of every 10,000 new ipods people buy is defective). Amazon has a generous return policy, and Samsung has a good warranty (though as a few people have said here, in some cases it's been hard to get warranty service in a timely fashion). So I think it's a risk worth taking. br / br /In sum, this is an absolutely great TV - great picture, tons of connectivity options, great features, and, while not the cheapest 52" TV, definitely the best one and a great value for this quality. br / br /If 52" is too big for your living room, Samsung makes a 46" version of this same TV for about $450 less - a great price compared with other retailers - and offers the same FREE "white glove" shipping and delivery service you'd get with this TV. br / br /I'm very happy with the TV and with the terms of my purchase from Amazon. (And I SWEAR I am not an Amazon employee!! Really!!!)
Very good TV for the money December 3, 2008 R. Knobel 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had this TV for 3 weeks now. Delivery was fast, on time and no damages. I bought this TV from Amazon. TV looks very good. The picture quality is amazing. Sometimes some shows look like real picture. Did not have any issues yet. Had to read manual in order to find the touch panel. Has enough HDMI inputs.
Great TV impressed with Amazon, good delivery by Pilot December 3, 2008 Lee S. Rossavick (Nor Cal) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
AFter much thought and wringing of hands, the 650 turned out to be just right. Glare is not a problem for us, fine we may have to turn off a light or close a blind. So the 630 in my opinion would not have been necessary with the flat screen. br / br /Delivery by Pilot was much better than expected, they had called me to make a delivery appointment, the dispatcher who was in Hayward, was on top of the delivery and she kept her word. Two guys showed up in the deliver truck, I asked if they could removed my old 46 inch very heavy TV off the stand. They said they would, I was worried because it is so heavy I do on know if I can lift it. They unplugged and disconnected the cables and moved it across the room for me. Then they Removed my new 650 from the box and placed it on the stand, could see no damage to the box or the TV, they plugged in the TV, placed batteries in the remote and showed me it was working. I signed the papers and they left. Not many stores would have come out to my place and done the extras. Since I live 16 miles from the closest town, I had figured on a Freight Truck delivery and they would not do more than kick the box out of the truck, but Pilot came in a van and made it a pleasant experience, they made sure the TV was not damaged. br / br /I hooked up everything else myself and it works great. What great pictures we get with Dish HD programs and my 1080I DVD player, not sure if I will feel a desire for a Blue Ray player? br / br /Originally I was going for a Plasma TV, but after researching, the lower energy use of the LCD Samsung, plus it seems LCD's have less problems than Plasma. br / br /Watch the prices on Amazon they move up and down, I was lucky we purchased on a low price day. Great deal with Amazon and free delivery, you cannot compare it. .
Consumer Reports forgot to test battery life on the remote... December 3, 2008 Peter M. Ranon (Melbourne, FL United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We purchased the Samsung LN52A650 based on Consumer Reports rating of HDTV of bigger than 46". We waited until the LN52A750 was out before making the purchase since we assumed that newer versions are always going to be better. Much to our surprise, the A650 rated better than A750 so we went ahead and purchased it. The A650 is pretty much what we expected it to be including the intuitive and user friendly remote. Within a month of purchase, the battery went dead on the remote and we figured that the batteries we put in must not have been fresh and promptly replaced them. Then within 2 weeks, they went dead again and at this point, it dawned on us that the little light bulb that lights up the buttons when you apply motion is what's using up the juice in the battery. We are now more careful to ensure that the remote stays on a firm surface like top of the table (and not being subject to motion like on the couch where it could drain the battery). So watch out for the battery eating remote!!!
